God's love is shown most clearly at the cross. John 3:16 declares that God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, and Romans 5:8 adds that "God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Because he first loved us, we are able to love in return, "We love because he first loved us" (1 John 4:19). His love is the source and pattern for ours.
