It's time now for the Classic Cinema Rewind with Pastor Jay. I'll see you back at the hut. Oh boy. Hey, doggie. Now join Pastor Jay as we rewind the tape. And enjoy some classic cinema. We thank you for joining us, whether it be on the podcast itself or whether it be on the videocast, if you're watching us on the videocast. Whatever you're watching or listening, we appreciate you doing so. And this, as we're recording this right now, it depends on when you're watching or listening, whether we are or not. But right now, as we're recording this, we are nine days deep into the month of October. So, yeah, it's Halloween season. And we got some really cool stuff we want to talk about today. And so we're not going to waste any more time. We're going to jump right into it with an interesting TV series. a horror TV series that isn't quite a horror TV series and a very rare film that you probably are not going to find that deals, that kind of is a precursor to the TV series. What in the world are you talking about, Pastor Jay? Well, let's jump right into this, and we're going to share with you about this TV series. A TV series that is a horror TV series that's not a horror TV series. What? I'm talking about Dark Shadows. Maybe some of you have heard of this. Maybe some of you don't even know what Dark Shadows is. Maybe some of you only know Dark Shadows from the Johnny Depp thing. Don't even get me started on that. But anyway, we don't have the whole series because it's very, very, very expensive and a lot of episodes to get through and all that type of stuff. So we don't have the whole series, but we do have some of the best of the series, and it's pretty cool. We got this, which is Dark Shadows' greatest episodes. This is a DVD set that has some of the best episodes voted by the fans of this TV series. It's a pretty cool release. I like that. But we'll talk about that in just a second. Then we got, these are my favorite of the three that we have. We have Dark Shadows, The Vampire's Curse. This is a very cool release. It's one disc, of course. Well, it's a little upside down there, if you're watching the video. But anyway, the disc was upside down. But anyway, there we go. Dark Shadows, The Vampire's Curse is one disc, and a very, very cool thing. It tells the story arc of Barnabas Collins, a man who is cursed by a witch to become a vampire. And it goes through some of his story, telling the story of the vampire's curse. I love this. I watched this last year. We bought this last year, and we watched this in one night's sitting. So, yeah, it took us quite a while, but it was well worth it. It is very, very cool. Dark Shadows, the vampire's curse. And then we bought something else last year, which was Dark Shadows, The Haunting of Collinwood. Very, very cool. Not as good as Vampire's Curse, of course, but this deals with Collinwood, which is the Collinwood Mansion, where Barnabas Collins and his family have lived for generations. And it is very, very cool. Dark Shadows basically is a supernatural horror soap opera. And I know that sounds really strange, but I had heard of Dark Shadows from my mom for many, many years. Because my mom told me stories about how she would come home from school right around time that this was on. and my grandmother, her mother, would always say, come on in, come on in, Dark Shadows is coming on. And mom would sit there and say, I don't want to watch this. But grandma wanted to have somebody watch it with her, so my mom was elected. So mom had seen Dark Shadows and she told me all about it. And I was like, I got to check that out one of these days. And so these came up at our FYE. And I was like, you know, and they were very, very cheap. They were like, each of these were like about a dollar something a piece. So, yeah, I picked them up. And I kind of fell in love with the idea of Dark Shadows. Someday I'd like to get the whole series. We'll see. I don't know about that. But we'll see. Someday. But until then, I'm kind of happy with these collections. They're pretty cool. Now, interestingly enough, we're talking about Dark Shadows. But we want to talk to you about a, give you a kind of a recommendation for a film that is very rare if you can find it. And it is very good if you can find it. Dan Curtis was the writer, producer, and all of Dark Shadows. But before he did Dark Shadows, he tried to see if it would work. The idea of a soap opera-like vampire thing would work. So he did a TV movie and that where this came in Wait till you see this Dan Curtis Dracula starring Jack Palance Okay, yes, you heard me right. Jack Palance as Dracula. What? That just sounds so strange, but it's true. Jack Palance as Dracula. You've got to be kidding me, but that is so true. So this Blu-ray, we got this Blu-ray at our FYE last year, and it was, I think, $5 for a Blu-ray. And when I saw the idea, when I saw Jack Palance on the front cover, and it said Dracula, I was like, you have got to be kidding me. And so I had to check that out. I had to get $5 for a Blu-ray. I had to get it. So I got it, brought it home, checked it out. I can see where this truly was, that type of thing. This was Dan Curtis trying to see if he could get a Dark Shadows type of thing to work, if he could get the funding for it, if there was an audience for it. So it was basically a TV movie, and a lot of people seemed to enjoy it. And, you know, hey, it came out pretty cool, and thus that's why we got Dark Shadows was because of this. I will say Jack Palance surprisingly does a pretty good job as Dracula for what it is. It's not your typical Dracula film that we know and love a lot of times. It's more of the romantic kind, so it has a lot of heart, a lot of emotion, a lot of stuff like that. And it deals with Jack Palance, his character of Dracula, his lost love, and how it changed him and made him into Dracula, the vampire and all this. And you see the story, and I don't want to spoil it, so I'm not going to spoil it, But you see how it happens, and it's really kind of cool. So I do suggest that if you can ever find Dracula starring Jack Palance, definitely give it a shot. It is definitely worth checking out. Rare, very rare to find it if you can. But if you can, it is definitely, definitely worth checking out. That's our suggestion for the rarity. Now we're going to the main event right after this. Free movies and TV produced by Pastor Jay at classiccinemamagazine.blogspot.com or at youtube.com slash therealpastorjay. Alright, thank you for staying with us here on Classic Cinema Rewind. And we are right in Halloween season. And, oh, I love it. It's one of my favorite times of the year, getting to watch all the old films, the old horror films. There's something about those old ones that just, they excite me. I love them. I love the old films. And we're talking about the main event this time around. We got a big, huge box set. This is a big, huge box set here, as you can see. This is huge. Those of you that are watching on the video, if you're listening to the podcast, you can't see it. But there's a huge box set here. This huge box set is from Mill Creek Entertainment. It was released a couple years ago, but it is so awesome. I've watched it several times, and it is so amazing. And it is perfectly named for this time of the year the Horror Hall of Fame Collection. Oh, I love it. 26 horror films. Okay, very, very cool. And those of you that are watching on the video, you can see what the case looks like. Those of you that are maybe listening to the podcast, you can't. But very cool box set. It has four icons of horror right on the front cover in the black and white. You got Boris Karloff. You got Peter Cushing. You got Christopher Lee. And you got Vincent Price. All four icons of horror. And then it says Horror Hall of Fame in gold lettering. I love it. It's so cool. This is a box set filled with amazing things. And we're going to kind of break it down really fast, but not spend a whole long time. It is a five-disc set or five DVD set. There's a couple discs in some of them, but they're basically a five DVD set of things. This is pretty cool. The first one we pull out is the Boris Karloff Collection. This is a two-disc DVD set, which gives you three movies on each DVD. And the Boris Karloff Collection is pretty cool. You have The Black Room, The Man They Could Not Hang, The Man With Nine Lives, Before I Hang, The devil commands and the boogeyman will get you. Very, very cool. These are the old classic thriller, horror kind of genre films with Boris Karloff. And very, very cool. I love this set. These old films with Boris Karloff are just really special. So this was just, you know, a lot of these were just after he had played the Frankenstein monster in the classics, classic Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein. And he kind of continued that horror genre with a lot of dramatic horror thriller type of films. And this is one, this collection is just filled with great stuff. So definitely, first one is so worthwhile checking out. The second one that is in this collection is the Vincent Price collection I am a big fan of Vincent Price I think Vincent Price is one of my favorite horror film actors of all time That's saying a little bit because I love all of them in some way, shape, or form, but I think Vincent Price is my favorite. Vincent was a very debonair type of person, very well-educated, very great, and very sophisticated, very awesome, but yet he could flip that switch really fast, and he was amazing at it. In this collection, we get very, very interesting five Vincent Price films. We get The House on Haunted Hill, we get The Last Man on Earth, we get The Shock, we get The Bat, and we get The Jackals. Now, of course, House on Haunted Hill and The Last Man on Earth, many people know that film. And many people know even the shock and the bat. But the one we want to talk about is the Jackals. This film actually probably doesn't belong in this collection as much as I wish it did. Because the Jackals is basically a western. So it's really, I don't consider it really a horror film. Although it has horrific scenes in it. and stuff like that, but it's more Western to me, it's that type of thing, but I guess I can see what Mill Creek was doing there, these are all public domain films, and something that I don't particularly care for, one disc, all five films on one disc, that kind of squeezes the picture a little bit, so not the absolute best way to go about it, but it's okay, You've got to take into consideration, too, that these old films are not looking the best anyway. So squeezing five films on one DVD is not going to be that big of a difference because they're not taken from the original masters. So you're not going to lose a whole lot from what we get anyway if you go online and even watch these public domain ones. So if you want to have it, this is a good way to have these five films, but not actually the best way to go about it. Five movies on one DVD, but it's okay. the next one in this big box set is classic horror four horror films on two DVDs so you get two movies on one disc two movies on another disc and in this collection we have interestingly enough we got five we have the mad magician we have the man who turned to stone and we have the Terror of the Tongs. Now, in these collections, the Mad Magician, of course, is Vincent Price, which is epic, and so glad we have that. The Man Who Turned to Stone, Victor Jory, is in this one. Some of you may know him, maybe not. I'm not going to go into detail with that, because we don't have time for all that, but definitely Google him. You'll see some of the stuff he was in. And then Terror of the Tongs has Christopher Lee in it, and Christopher Lee in Asian makeup, so probably not very PC in this era, but it's still okay, in my opinion, because this is old classic horror, we're going back in time, we're not living in, these films are not living in the PC era, so that's why they can get away with it, because it was not the PC era at this time. Okay, but definitely a very good little mix of films there. Mad Magician is probably the best of the four here. Some of you may have a different opinion on these, but Mad Magician is probably the best, at least to me. Then finally, in this box set, you get two, count them, two, Hammer Horror Film Collections. All this is great stuff. Okay, so in no particular order, because they're not in volume one and two, so we'll just grab one and go from there. But the first one is this. This is pretty amazing artwork. If you're watching on the video, you can see it. It's a yellow background, and it has all the different iconic characters of Frankenstein and different things all over. I mean, it's just gorgeous. and in this box set, this two disc DVD set, you're getting six films on two DVDs. So three films per DVD. On this first collection, you get The Creatures That World Forgot. You get The Revenge of Frankenstein, one of my favorite Hammer horror films, The Revenge of Frankenstein. I like that better than it's the sequel, and yet I like the sequel better, which is strange, but I really do. I like the sequel, The Revenge of Frankenstein. Then you get Maniac, Never Take Candy from a Stranger. You get Die, Die, My Darling. And then an interesting film on here that I was very surprised about that I love, and it is called The Snorkel. Now, that doesn't sound like a horror film, does it? The Snorkel, but it has horror elements, and it is very amazing to find out what The Snorkel is all about. Amazing. Love it. Great. It's just one of my favorites. I really think The Snorkel is probably one of my favorite Hammer horror films. I know that's going to probably sound strange to some people, especially some people that may have seen The Snorkel, but I really love that film. Oh, I tell you, good stuff. And I don't want to give it away in case somebody wants to watch it. And then finally, Hammer Films Collection. This is, I guess we'll say this is Volume 2, even though it's not a volume. This one has five movies on two DVDs So you get three on one two on the other And in this collection you get the two faces of Dr Jekyll You get the Scream of Fear, the Gorgon, Stop Me Before I Kill, and then the Curse of the Mummy's Tomb. And interestingly enough, I found something very interesting on these DVD sets. something very, very interesting that I never noticed. I just noticed it this time around as I brought them off the shelf and was looking at it. I found something very interesting on this case here. For those of you that are looking on the video, you can see that on the front cover, it has the names of the films on the bottom of the DVD. Well, the very first one there says, the two of faces, Dr. Jekyll. There's a misprint on there. I never noticed that until just now, when I was preparing this podcast. So there you go. That's something very interesting. The two of faces, Dr. Jekyll. It's supposed to be the two faces of Dr. Jekyll. But it happens. Believe me, it happens. When you write for any length of time, you know that. We've done this. We review and we write articles and we read over them several times and you don't notice it. And then you can go back a little bit later, read it again, and then you go, wait a minute, oh, I missed that. So it happens. But there is a misprint on that. So I just found that kind of interesting. I thought I'd share that. But this is a very good collection. So if you have never seen this box set of the Horror Hall of Fame, I definitely suggest checking this out. Mill Creek Entertainment has done a tremendous job with this. Just a great box set. Looks amazing on the shelf. Just spectacular. Nice and very good. So definitely check out the Horror Hall of Fame collection if you are a fan of those old Hammer horror films or Vincent Price or Boris Karloff. That is definitely one to check out.
