Transcript: Top Christian Movies 2019: Faith-Based DVD & Blu-ray Releases

Hey, Classic Cinema fans. This is Pastor Jay here with you on the Classic Cinema Rewind. We want to thank you for joining us, whether you're watching the video on YouTube or UltimateTube, or whether you're listening to us on our podcast, whichever the case may be. We thank you for joining us. Today is a very special day. Today is our look back at 2019 with physical media releases. We're giving you our top 15 releases of 2019. Now, this is very difficult. It's taken a lot of hard work to try to narrow these down, and we feel very uncomfortable somewhat with even these releases because so many just didn't make the cut, and that doesn't mean they're not great releases. is it just, there's just so much space, 15 spaces, and there's just not much you can do with them. So what we did was we got some of the most entertainment value in the releases and gave those the ones that get the spot on these releases. So whether it be bonus features or just more content, as the case may be with a TV series. So we're going to jump right into this. and we're not going to really go delve deep into this. Number 15, starting off, first cracking a whip. This just got released, so this just came in just in time for the 2019-15 spot. This is for Get Smart fans. This is the return of Maxwell Smart. This is the nude bomb. I always loved Get Smart. So for me, when Kina Lorber said that they were going to release this, I was like, you have got to be kidding me, and that's why I contacted them about that and see if we can review this. And the fine folks said, yes, definitely. So it was like, yay. So we got to review this, and this is really a great release. It looks spectacular, much better than the DVD release. Plus, it is jam-packed with all kinds of audio commentaries, deleted scenes, extended scenes, alternate dialogue scenes, all kinds of interesting things. Very, very great release, and it looks spectacular. So if you're a fan of Get Smart, definitely pick up The Nude Bomb, The Return of Maxwell Smart. It is definitely worth it from Kina Lorber. All right. Continuing on, number 14 on our list. This actually is two releases, but they're sharing a release because they complete a set. All right. This is from the great folks at Classic Flicks. This is, I love these old shows from back in the day, and the cop shows and the crime dramas and all this type of stuff. And so this is pretty cool. Public Defender, season one and two. We've allowed them to share one spotlight because this is, as far as this show got, two seasons. But this is the complete series, if you will, from Classic Flicks. And they have restored these things. They look spectacular. The episodes look absolutely amazing. They have been restored. They look better than I have ever seen anything you'd ever see on YouTube or anywhere else. These look absolutely amazing. They're definitely worth checking out if you're a fan of those old 50s and 60s TV shows from back in the day. Definitely worth looking at. This is from 54 and 55. The series, Public Defender, love this show. And so that's why these two get this spot at number 14 of the best of 2019. All right, we're on to number 13 in our releases of the top for 2019. Coming in at number 13, this is a Warner Archive release. This is The Man from Atlantis, the original TV movie. A really interesting film, TV movie that stars Patrick Duffy. Before he broke out into the show Dallas, this was his first really jumping point into television to where we got to kind of see him. And then it wasn't long after that that he got on to Dallas and then the rest, as they say, is history. But this is a really interesting release. release. He plays a man from Atlantis, thus the name Man from Atlantis, but it's sort of like a cheaper version, or I call it a poor man's version of Aquaman, but it kind of is. He plays a man from Atlantis, and he, with the help of some scientists and all, kind of helped save the world from evil people. So very, very cool. This actually went into several different TV movies and then into a TV series. I'm hoping we will get the rest of the TV movies eventually. That would be very, very cool, especially on Blu-ray. Maybe Warner Archive will do that. But they were giving Man from Atlantis a number 13 spot on our list because it really does look spectacular. All right, number 12 on our list comes from the great people at Mill Creek Entertainment. They released this on a Blu-ray set and a DVD set. We got the DVD set, which is pretty cool. I don't have a problem with this in the world. The Shield. This was an FX series. Very, very adult. Okay, this is not for the kids at all. There's a lot of adult content in this. It is very, very rough sometimes with language, with violence, and with sexual stuff. So it's not for the kids at all. This is basically an adult series. But it is really pretty cool. It is a hard box set, which is cool. I like that. 18 discs, and they come like this. to where you slide them out like that, and you get a disc on each side of the sleeve which is pretty cool And something that was really cool with this release was we got a booklet that gives us all the episodes with synopsis of each episode which was really cool now like I said this is available on Blu-ray for those people that would like the more sturdy Blu-ray edition it is available there on Blu-ray as well but the DVD is perfectly fine for me I don't have a problem with it and to have the shield yeah that's pretty cool so the shield on DVD is the complete series is number 12 continuing with the fine folks at Mill Creek Entertainment. They know I love me some classic stuff. No, I'm kidding. But I do love classic stuff, whether it be classic movies, classic TV. And this one, I discovered this show a few years ago with my parents, actually, when I was a little bit younger. They introduced me to this show, and when I saw this, I didn't know this, They even made this, but this is really cool. This show was called Heart to Heart. This is the Heart to Heart movie series. All right, so this is the DVD of the movie series. This is Movies Are Murder Collection, all eight made-for-TV heart-to-heart movies. So we're not talking about the TV series here. These are the made-for-TV movies that came later, like reunion movies, if you will, that came after the series was canceled. So very, very cool. You got eight of these in one box set or one set here. Now, the DVDs are stacked. That can be a problem for some people. It's not my favorite way to go about it, but it's okay. If you're careful with them, you're not going to scratch them. but 8 movies in one set yeah that is a win anytime you can get 8 movies in a set and it is good to note that these do come they are 4 discs so there's 2 movies per disc which is not bad they look perfectly fine they are really good quality definitely that's why this makes number 11 on our list of the top 15 we got time for one more and then we're going to take a quick commercial break. And this is a scary way to conclude this first section. This is also from the fine folks at Mill Creek Entertainment. This is Forever Night. Yeah, I said that weird. I know. No, but this is a box set of the TV series Forever Night. It was basically a vampire who is trying to make amends for his vampirism by being a detective and trying to help out people. So really kind of cool. It's the same kind of thing. You get your sleeves, your DVD sleeves that have all the discs on there. One side has a disc and then the other side has another disc. and this does not come on Blu-ray, so if you want this, this is only on DVD from Mill Creek Entertainment. Would I have liked to have seen it on Blu-ray? It would have been nice, but probably the amount of money that would have went into getting this on Blu-ray wouldn't have been worth it because the episodes were not made in the highest of quality, so trying to put these on Blu-ray wouldn't have really done a whole lot. So they look pretty impressive, though, on the DVD. So that's why Forever Night, this really interesting vampire action-adventure show, comes in at number 10 on the top 15 of 2019 releases. And this is also from Mill Creek Entertainment. This one I really enjoyed. I didn't get to see this when it first made its rounds on TV. So this was my first time running into this show was when we got to review this one. And that is the complete TV series of King of Queens or The King of Queens. Kevin James, probably many people know him from like Paul Blart Mall Cop or Here Comes the Boom or different ones like Zookeeper. There's another one. Maybe you remember him from that. Well, this was how he really got his start in television and in front of us. Of course, stand-up comedian as well, but we know him as the King of Queens. yeah so this is a really good show Jerry Stiller is in this and he is hilarious in this show as well as Leah Remney she's very good as well comic foil too Kevin James' crazy antics as a delivery truck driver and he's you know just a typical guy just trying to do what he wants to do and not wanting to grow up. It's pretty cool. The show is really cool. It's the same type of thing. We got the little flip case here. It's a hard shell case, or a hard box case, I should say, cardboard case. You got your sleeves that have one disc per side, so two discs on each sleeve and cardboard sleeve. And there is nine seasons in this box set, 207 episodes. Yeah, that's why this one makes the list because, I mean, 207 episodes? Yeah, that's got to make the list. So number nine is King of Queens. All right, number eight on our list is a little 90s action. Yeah, this is from MVD Rewind Collection. Rewind, rewind, that is Double Dragon. I love this movie. I mean this this I know a lot of people consider it bad but I love this movie I think this was spectacular Just just a lot of fun It not a great film No it not It not a great film But it a cult classic We've come to love it over the years. And I just, I don't know. There's just something about it. It's a rewind collection. So we got the kind of like old retro looking thing with all kinds of stickers that you would find at Blockbuster on the slipcover. You got special collector's edition Blu-ray DVD. Be Kind Rewind is on there as well as martial arts. And pretty cool. So that's the slipcover. But when you take the slipcover off, you get regular artwork, which is cool. It also comes with reversible artwork on the Blu-ray, which is cool. more what you would find on the slipcover just without the Be Kind Rewind type thing. But very cool. So you get the Blu-ray, your DVD, and you get something really interesting. You get a mini movie poster. Those of you that are watching on YouTube can see the mini poster. If you're not, then you can't see that if you're listening to the audio. But it does come with a mini poster, which is very, very cool. So that is why this one is really cool, and that's why we had to allow this one to be part of the edition at number eight to our release. And just as a quick side note, MVD also released Double Dragon, the animated series, to go along with this, so this is pretty cool. So just a little shout-out for that as well. All right, we're coming down to the home stretch here. Okay, number seven on the top 15 is a release from Warner Archive. This is V, the original miniseries. Oh, I am so excited about this. This thing has been totally restored and looks amazing. The original releases have been kind of cropped and all in your, like, the full screen edition. These are the original widescreen edition. This is the original widescreen edition, and it looks spectacular. It looks absolutely amazing. I am so excited about this. I was so excited to be able to relive this one and to see this and to see it in high definition and to see it in this great of a quality. Wow, so amazing. I'm hoping that we get the second miniseries. That would be so cool to get that on Blu-ray. Maybe 2020 be the final battle on 2020. Wow. Ooh, I'm excited. Maybe that happens. Warner Archive, make it happen. Let's do it. All right. Number six on our countdown is I love classic TV, and I had only the first season of this. I couldn't get the rest of it until Mill Creek came forth and did this. Robin Hood, the complete series. This is the old Robin Hood series from the 50s. So cool. All four. Now get this. All four seasons on one box type thing. Oh, this is so cool. Now, the only thing with this, this one is a little bit not as great a packaging. I have to say that. They have the cardboard slip here. and then when you get into it, you just got a flimsy kind of casing that holds your sleeves so they're not real hard shell. It's just a flimsy casing, but if you're careful with it, it's not going to be a problem. I own a lot of these that Mill Creek did, but the only reason this lands on this is because you're getting four complete seasons of the classic. show Robin Hood. That has to go on the list because it is just so cool. Plus with this also comes the digital copy that you can redeem on Movie Spree, Mill Creek's streaming service. That is very cool as well. That is a big props, a big thumbs up. That's why we put that at number six. Continuing with a little bit of Robin Hood, our number five release is Robin Hood Origins, also from Mill Creek Entertainment. This has five Robin Hood films. If you want to say that, we won't say that. Well, we're not going to go into that. Read the review. But anyway, you got The Bandit of Sherwood Forest. You got The Prince of Thieves. That's not what you're thinking of, maybe some of you, that is not Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves, this is the Prince of Thieves, it's an older film, just to make that clear, The Black Arrow, Rogues of Sherwood Forest, and The Sword of Sherwood Forest, so very, very cool, five films that kind of have four that are Robin Hood, one that's maybe not so much, read the full review for that, but anyway, But we get a two-disc set. You get two discs there. So you get three films on one DVD and two films on the other. They all look really spectacular. And so if you're a Robin Hood fan and you want to see the origins, the true origins of Robin Hood, check these out. Very cool release. The origins, Robin Hood origins. Very, very cool. Landing at number five. All right, we're down to the home stretch. Number four on the release is really a cool one. Love this. Another Warner Archive release. This one is Shazam! Okay, now this is not Shazam! the new movie. No, this is Shazam! the 70s TV series. This was so amazing. When Warner Archive said they were going to release this, the little kid inside of me jumped with joy because I always wanted this series on Blu-ray or DVD or some way. Couldn't get it. So I actually bought it on digital. And I love my digitals. Don't get me wrong. I love my digitals, but I like the physical media too. And so, man, when they said, we're going to release Shazam on Blu-ray, I was like, oh, I'm so in. So I had to jump on this. Shazam on Blu-ray, wow. And it does look amazing. It looks a lot better on Blu-ray than it does on the digital, at least to me it does. So yeah, definitely. That's why Shazam has to come in at number four of the top 15 releases of 2019. One more, let's see if we can squeeze one more in before one more commercial break. All right. This one also from Warner archive was so spectacular when they said, we're going to release the original Jetsons. You got to be kidding me The original series the Jetsons the Jetsons basically ran for one season in its original run I don know why that actually happened because Jetsons was so cool The Flintstones ran for a long time. Jetsons only lasted one season. I don't know. Apparently people couldn't see the coolness of what Jetsons were. I don't know. Back in the day. But they only lasted for one season, 24 episodes. And so, yeah, so this was the original Jetsons TV series from the 60s and very, very cool. And now on Blu-ray and it has been restored and looks absolutely spectacular. If you're a fan of the Jetsons, you've got to have this series on Blu-ray. It is that amazing. All right, we're going to run a little over on this edition of Classic Cinema Rewind, but we'll be right back after this with our final two. And we've got to make this fast because we're running out on time. All right. This we're talking about in number two is also a Mill Creek release. And we're just going to box these together because we just it's kind of hard to not. This is the Ultraman series. OK, it's kind of hard not to talk about all of them. If I had to pick one, it would probably be Ultraman is my favorite. But, I mean, I love Ultra Q, the introductory series. Loved Ultraman. And Ultra 7's been amazing, too. So it's kind of hard to break those down. So instead of doing that, we just did this. So coming in at number two is the Ultraman series, the original series. Now, also, Mill Creek Entertainment has released the newer Ultraman, which is cool if you are a fan of the Ultraman in its entirety. I mean, that's great. We love the classics here. So, you know, that's what we do. So that's why Ultraman, Ultra Q, and Ultra 7 are getting the number two spot. Because I just can't put them down to specifically break them down. All right, so definitely check those out if you can. They do not have your English dubbing, but that's okay. Read the subtitles. It's not a major deal. All right. Now, for our number one release of 2019, this is from Warner Archive. Just snuck in at 2019 this year. This is Teen Titans, the original TV series. This is not the Teen Titans Go. This is the original Teen Titans, and this is one of my absolute favorites. I love the very first time I ever watched Teen Titans. I fell in love with it. For the simple reason of the music, the theme song, Puffy Amayumi's Teen Titans, I loved that theme. It was just amazing. And then when I saw the way the animation was and everything, I fell in love with it. It was that the theme song hooks you, and then the TV series makes you go, wow, this is amazing. This is what can happen in animation with superhero animation. Yeah. So it is an amazing set. You get all five seasons of the TV series. Season 1, Season 2, Season 3, Season 4, Season 5, and the Teen Titans Trouble in Tokyo movie. So this really is a complete series. That's why it gets number one on our release this year of 2019. All right, so as you can say, this has been one amazing 2019 for physical media. We have had an absolute blast reviewing all these great releases, these and so many more we have.
