Transcript: Eternal Life: Is Jesus the Key to Salvation?

The Great Spirit in the Sky Religions throughout history have talked of another life after the one we are now experiencing, and it has given them hope of a better world. Whether it was to be a great life of great wealth and power for those buried in the Egyptian pyramids, or just talk about a happy hunting ground from the great spirit in the sky for American Indians, It offered an extension of what we are now experiencing, with some hope of it being better. So, in that regard, Christianity is similar to all these other religions. But who really has the key to fulfilling all these wishes? Isn't it just mankind's attempt to explain away our mortality? The Pharisees and Sadducees, two Jewish sects, argued between themselves about such a concept, because one side, the Pharisees, believed that there is a resurrection, while the other side, the Sadducees, argued that there is not enough evidence to say with confidence that there is life after death. It was not a major theme in the Old Testament, and so there was not overwhelming evidence one way or the other. What seems abundantly clear, however, from interactions that took place between Jesus and the Pharisees, those who did believe in life after death, is that if Jesus was the one to decide who gets it and who does not, the Pharisees almost certainly would not have qualified. In other words, just saying that there is such a thing as life after death does not give anyone assurance that they actually possess it. And I think the situation is not so different today. We have churches everywhere telling themselves that they are going to live forever because of something that Jesus said, or because of something someone else said that Jesus said, while these very same people show almost no interest in anything else that Jesus said Personally I think we could do more to build the kingdom of heaven that Jesus was trying to build if we could succeed in kicking the crutches out from under every professing Christian in the world today and convince them that they are not going to heaven. I know, that's a shocking thing to say. But the first and most important reason why I say it is precisely because most, if not all of them, are not going to go to heaven and they really do need to re-examine why they believe otherwise. You see, unless you believe that salvation has nothing to do with Jesus unless you believe in a kind of universalism where it doesn't matter what you believe and still you can inherit eternal life, unless you believe that then the onus is on you to examine what it is that makes you think that you are going to get to heaven. I know, I know. We all say that Jesus promised it, that he is the one who paid the price to give it to us, that he really is one with the Creator of the universe and thus able to make good on that promise. But what I want to ask you is this. Where is Jesus recorded as having said in the Bible, whatever it was that your pastor or someone else in the church has told you is all that it takes to get eternal life? Show me where he said that you could be a disciple because the word Christian was not even used when Jesus walked the earth. Show me where Jesus said that you could be his disciple and not give up everything you have to follow him, traveling all over the world, teaching people to obey everything that he has told us to do. Show me where Jesus said that you could stay where you are and be a so-called witness on your job and teach others to do the same thing. Show me where he said that you need approval from your wife your kids and your pastor before you can obey him Show me where he said that he needs someone to make money in order for his kingdom to survive here on earth You want to go to heaven when you die You say that the only way you can get there is through Jesus but then you don't even bother to listen to him, to weigh up what you have been told all your life in some cases. What you have been told it takes to get that all-important ticket to eternal life, the ticket that almost every religion in the world talks about, but which none of them can make good on. You may as well be building your own little pyramid in the backyard. Figuratively, that is what most of you are doing at the moment. The gospel, you say, is all about eternal life, and you tell me that you can preach the so-called gospel without needing to do anything that Jesus told his followers to do. All the stuff that Jesus taught is just optional frills, on top of free tickets based on nothing but hot air. Hot air about you just saying that Jesus is your Saviour. About you just saying that he is your Lord. About you just saying that everything has been fixed up between you and God without any reference to what Jesus actually taught. You're like a dishonest marathon runner jumping into the race just before the finish line and claiming a gold medal without ever having run the race. Salvation is something that only Jesus can decide. It's not your choice. All you can choose is whether to believe Jesus and obey him or whether to not believe Jesus and not obey him. That is your choice. Eternal life? Well, Jesus is going to decide that one. But he'll do it based on what he thinks about the real choice you have made, and what you did with it. I suggest you get out of that pyramid that you've been building on Sunday mornings and go listen to Jesus for he alone has the words of eternal life Anything other than what he taught is little more than pagan superstitions I mean it Churches everywhere are feeding people on various myths about salvation and because these myths are all, at least outwardly, easier to believe than what Jesus actually did teach, we gobble them up. Snake Oil Salvation God could make better believers out of dead stones than what you find in churches all over the world. I think it's time for the whole world to recognize that real Christianity as a religious institution simply does not exist. We live in a world full of false messiahs, all preaching their various false gospels, while the real gospel lies on the shelves all over the world, collecting dust. Don't you think it's time for you to let go of all that wishful thinking and front up to the reality of the real Christ and the real gospel that he preached?
