The Elephant in the White House I woke up this morning with this great title for a video, The Elephant in the White House. It combines the imagery of the Republican Party with the big guy who has been trumpeting his role in that party for the past four years. But does the title really reflect what is happening or what has been happening over there? Remember, when we talk about the elephant in the room, we are wanting to draw attention to something of momentous significance, something that is happening all around us, and yet something that we are all conspiring to sweep under the carpet. Have people really pretended that such a big mouth was not present in the White House for the past four years? Of course not. If there really is an elephant in the White House, it must be something bigger than the Republican Party, and it would definitely be something bigger than Donald Trump. What is it that we are all conspiring to cover up? And is it still going to be there after Trump leaves the White House? I listened to some very emotional and frankly very inspiring acceptance speeches from Joe Biden and Kamala Harris yesterday, And so I wanted to believe that we have come out of the woods, that America has turned the corner, that we can all breathe a sigh of relief now, and that the world is not such a bad place after all. But I wonder how many people could hear the contradictions in those acceptance speeches. Both members of the new presidential team talked about how Americans had this lovely tradition of saying angry, even hateful, things about one another in an election, and then burying the hatchet and all working together when the election is finished. They made us want to reach out and hug one another just relieved to have the trouble all behind us But at the same time they were forced to admit that what had just transpired had in fact been a serious threat to everything that democracy stands for. Not only had democracy been under threat, but so had science. And, worse still, truth itself had been under threat. The election really had been very close to a war between good and evil. But they wanted us to believe that 75 million voters, one-quarter of the American population, had just saved the world simply by casting a vote, even though another 70 million Americans had voted in favor of a potential dictatorship through incredible lies and ridiculous conspiracy theories. From this point on, they wanted us to believe America is going to stand for everything that is good. America truly is going to be great again. Oh, it would be so good to be able to believe that. After so many months of civil unrest, after so many thousands of unnecessary deaths from COVID... after four years of lies and hateful rhetoric... It would be nice to think that we only have a few more weeks of concern over the possibility that Trump will press the button in one final attempt to gain greater notoriety for himself. But all of this moral turnaround, if it is real, has supposedly happened without true repentance on the part of anyone. This is one of the great deceptions of democracy. People can be so easily convinced that a shift of one tenth of one percent in the ballot boxes of certain key states can represent a spiritual revolution. We tell ourselves that the elephant has been vanquished, that goodness has returned. And that you see is the real elephant in the White House America indifference if not outright rebellion against God is still there on both sides of the government It has not gone away, and it is not going away. America's need for repentance is still here. The evangelical right has long seen themselves as being the moral majority, the voice of decency, the prophets of judgment on a decadent society, the trumpets of truth. And yet, over the past four years, they have been exposed as the greatest hypocrites in the world today. They abandoned everything they ever stood for in their gospel of prosperity and self-righteousness. They wallowed in Donald Trump's litany of lies as they poured out of his tiny little mouth from morning to night. And all of this happened day after day and week after week without a hint of shame. But are these right-wing hypocrites really so different to those on the left who promote the slaughter of unborn babies right up to the time of birth so that they can live a more comfortable and selfish lifestyle? They dress it up as being respectable with a word like choice overlooking the fact that what they have chosen is actually to slaughter millions of babies simply because they are too lazy to practice contraception. And then there is personal sexual immorality. Even in the churches there is widespread fornication, adultery, divorce and remarriage. But the left revels in promiscuity and flaunts every form of perversion as proof of their right to make the rules. Worse still, they want us to believe that they are heroes, almost martyrs for some great moral cause, by thumbing their noses in the face of God. No the elephant in the White House is the elephant in the whole country in the churches and in the nightclubs as well Under the veneer of respectability on both sides there is blatant rebellion against God God blessed Joe Biden for having the courage to even mention God in his acceptance speech. But was he talking about a country under God? One which would humble itself to our Creator and let Him make the rules? Or is this a God whom the whole country, left and right, has consistently molded to conform with their own selfish and individualistic goals? I cannot see the elephant leaving as a result of this election. For the elephant, friends, is the sinfulness of America. Sinfulness which reaches up to heaven and which cries out in judgment against this country. a country which has so blasphemously taken the name of God in vain for decades. Come out of her, my people!
