Transcript: Christian Movie Reviews: Kino Lorber Blu-ray Releases

Greetings, classic cinema TV fans, this is Dr. Jay here with you once again, and today we're taking a first look at the brand new releases, the April releases from Kino Lorber. a pretty nice little stack here of Blu-rays. And we're going to take a first look and let you know what's coming to Blu-ray for the month of April 2021. Let's jump right into this. First is Battle Hymn. This is a film with Dan Duryea and Rock Hudson. A very interesting film. I have actually heard about this, but I've never seen it. So I'm really looking forward to checking this out for the first time. Very, very cool. What this is, is it's about a World War II fighter pilot, Colonel Dean Hess, who is played by Rock Hudson. And, uh, uh, during the war, he accidentally, uh, bombs a German orphanage. Well, this really sends him into an uproar, and he, um, spends the rest of his life, uh, trying to make amends for it, trying to help the orphans, um, during this ministry. It's, it's, it's really, uh, an awesome, awesome, uh, sounding film. I'm, I'm looking so forward to checking this out. I'm a big fan of Rock Hudson, I think. Rock Hudson was amazing this is going to be a good one I'm sure I'm going to enjoy this Battle Hymn you may want to check this one out as well it's going to be really really good I'm pretty sure it comes with audio commentary theatrical trailer cool stuff and now on Blu-ray coming in April from Kino Lorber Studio Classics coming up next they have released two or are going to release two box sets and I love these box sets these are really really cool and the next one this one uh on tap for April is uh that Carol Lombard Collection Volume 2 uh love that that box art that is just really really cool I love the way uh Keena Lorber Studio Classics does this box art classic black and white with just that tinge of a little bit of blue hue there. It's just very, very cool. It's classy. It's really awesome. I love that. And, yeah, three awesome Blu-ray movies from Carol Lombard. We're not going to jump into these and really go into great detail because we're going to do a full written review, so you need to keep your eyes open to retroac.blogspot.com. but there's a good mix here you get some screwball comedy you get some mystery you get all kinds of cool stuff so anyway first off you get this one the princess comes across Carol Lombard and Fred McMurray I love Fred McMurray Fred McMurray of course probably known for most people from probably my three sons but an amazing actor dramatic actor comedian all kinds of stuff was in many of the Disney films back in the day. But really, really cool stuff. And we'll give you the full written review coming up very, very soon about this. So you'll need to go check that out. But anyway, The Princess Come Across comes with audio commentary and trailers as well. Very, very cool. And two amazing actors here. And this is a murder mystery, if you will. and there's, as they say on the back here, with a touch of comedy. I like that. So that's pretty cool. In addition to this, we get another Fred McMurray, Carol Lombard film and it's this one, Hands Across the Table. And this one is more of a screwball comedy with the two of them, And both people trying to find love with money, you know, and how it all goes awry. And we won't go deep into that, but that's pretty cool. And then the final one in this collection of three films is this one. Very interesting artwork there. And that is really interesting artwork there. Love Before Breakfast. This, of course, has Carol Lombard and Cesar Romero in it. Really an interesting film. I actually have never seen this one, so I'm looking forward to checking this one out. I love Cesar Romero, so that's going to be very, very cool. I'm excited about these. So, anyway, three awesome films in the Carol Lombard Collection Volume 2 from Kino Lorber Studio Classics. Very, very awesome. All right, continuing on with another box set here is the Westerns Classics Volume 2. That is another really cool box set. I love this artwork. Just cool stuff. Just very cool stuff. Love that. All right. So in this one, we get three additional, right here, three films from Westerns. And interestingly enough, we're getting a lot of Fred McMurray this month of April. The first one, Gun for a Coward. That's the first one we picked out. So there you go. And this is Fred McMurray, Chill Wills, Dean Stockwell. Awesome stuff. Yeah, very, very cool. Comes with audio commentary and theatrical trailer. Again all this collection will come for a full written review We go deep into detail of what the films are and what they about and what we feel about them So be sure to go to retroac This is just kind of looking at the set and see what it looks like Very, very cool. Love that. That is just cool. All right, also, another one. Lee Marvin, known for being in many, many westerns, is in this one. Pillars of the Sky very very cool again audio commentary theatrical trailer really really cool stuff love that and that artwork is just awesome love that stuff alright and then finally the final one in this set of the westerns classics features Maureen O'Hara and this one Redhead from Wyoming interesting, very very cool oh I tell you this is really cool stuff and of course theatrical trailer and audio commentary is included in this as well, I just love these I tell you, Kina Lorber's Studio Classics are surprising me right and left every month they come out with something new and something fresh and something amazing and wow. And this one is no different. I'm really excited about checking this out. This is going to be awesome. So full written review for this one coming up as well. Two films from Mel Brooks. Mel Brooks, we probably all know Mel Brooks from Blazing Saddles, maybe High Anxiety, or Silent Movie, or Young Frankenstein, or whatever. But Mel Brooks was an amazing writer and director. He just had a really good sense of comedic timing. He just was really, really good at that. And they have, Kino Lorber Studio Classics has released on Blu-ray the amazing film The Producers. I am so, so excited about this. This is awesome. I love this artwork. This artwork is just gorgeous. Oh, my. Just soak that in. That is just beautiful artwork. Zero Mastow and Gene Wilder in this film. Amazing stuff. Just amazing. Basically what the producers is, is two producers that come up with an idea that they can make more money with a Broadway failure than with Broadway success. So they come up with an idea to write the worst play ever, musical ever, and get a whole bunch of backing, and then it flops, and then they get to keep all the money, or most of the money. Uh, but it doesn't quite go that way. And, uh, it's, it's hilarious. It's, it's a lot of fun. It um it Mel Brooks personified It it hilarious And I I looking forward to check out how awesome uh awesome this release is It is going to be awesome It audio commentary making of the producers playhouse outtake, sketch gallery, Peter Sellers' statement, radio spots, trailer, I mean, unbelievable. This one is loaded with good stuff, so yeah. This one, definitely, if you're a fan of Mel Brooks films, you're going to want to check that one out. And maybe, I don't know, this one is one of my favorites, so this is probably why I consider, why I waited to the end for this one, but this is brand new from Kina Lorba Studio Classics, and one of my favorite Mel Brooks films, Spaceballs. I tell you, just funny. It's just a funny, funny film. This one has amazing, an amazing cast. John Candy, love John Candy. Rick Moranis, who doesn't love Rick Moranis? Mel Brooks is in this. All kinds of great actors in this. But the thing that's really cool is, this is on Blu-ray, but beyond this is all of the additional bonus features. We're just going to go through them pretty quick here. Special features include audio commentary by Mel Brooks himself. Now that's worth the price right there. There's a Force Yourself featurette, Spaceballs the documentary featurette, conversation with Mel Brooks and co-writer Thomas Meehan. John Candy comic spirit, a little featurette about the genius of John Candy. That is so cool. Film flubs. Watch Spaceballs in ludicrous speed. Very, very cool. Storyboards and film comparison. That's pretty cool. As well as exhibitor trailer with Millbrook's introduction. Very, very cool. So, image galleries and theatrical trailer and teaser, all of this is on here. I mean, look at all that. That is just loaded up with bonus features. I mean, that is pretty amazing. So, yeah, I'm really looking forward to this. This one, and what we're going to do is sometime down the line, we're going to do a special comparison. because I've got the original DVD release, and I'm going to compare it with this release, and I'm going to let you know how amazing of a difference there is in this from the original DVD release.
