Now let's rewind the tape and join Pastor Jay for some retro entertainment talk on the Retro Drive-In Podcast. Welcome to this edition of the Retro Drive-In Podcast. I am Pastor Jay, your host today. And, you know, today we're going back in time. And we're talking about an amazing comedian and a pretty amazing human being as well. And we're talking about Bob. Thanks for the memories, Hope. Yeah, Bob Hope was pretty amazing. I love Bob Hope. He had such a unique way about his comedic timing. And I just loved the way he would, you know, give them one-liners, you know, and just kind of be kind of smart, a little bit of a smart aleck, if you will. I just thought he was really funny. Loved Bob Hope. and I think the thing that really endears me about Bob Hope is the countless hours that he spent entertaining the troops. I just think that is so amazing. Taking time away from his family during holidays and stuff to spend time and take some people with him and entertainers with him and going and entertaining the troops while they're defending the country. I think that is, wow, that is just so, so awesome. And he brought a lot of fun and a lot of laughter to many of our fighting men and women over across the seas all through his life. and he deserves a lot of credit and a lot of love for those countless hours upon hours upon hours over his lifetime that he spent time with the troops. He really does deserve a lot of love for that. And, you know, that's why today we're dedicating this whole podcast to Bob Hope. So, Bob Hope, thanks for the memories. television well they finally got me I want to tell you it's a great which camera's working now here in the classic cinema uh library uh where we're at right now uh this is one wing of the library uh you can't see it it's all around the room but anyway um but uh here in the classic Cinema Library, we have many Bob Hope films, many Bob Hope films, from probably one of my favorites, Lemon Drop Kid, to Pale Face and Son of Pale Face, many of the early films that he did throughout his career, all the road movies with Bing Crosby, you could just tell if i brought him out you could just tell i'm a big fan of bob hope now bob hope's movies he was not going in to try to save some say some amazingly um profound thing in his movies uh that's not what he wanted to do he just wanted to bring some entertainment to people and he did that very very well in his movies now the interesting thing is that Kino Lorber studio classics have released a lot of Blu of Bob Hope films And this past month we got three more amazing Blu to add to the collection from Kino Lorber Studio Classics And wow, three new Bob Hope films. Wow, is this awesome. First off, 1941's Nothing But The Truth. Wow. This is a really, really cute little film. In this film here, Bob Hope plays a stockbroker who is coming into a new company. and everybody sees how he kind of, Steve, you know, Bob Hope, is more of a straight-laced, tell-it-like-it-is-I-don't-lie-to-my-clients type of guy. And they sit there and say, nobody can do that. Nobody can tell the truth all the time. And so they bet him that he can't go 24 hours without lying at all. Well, lo and behold, doesn't it happen that he gets a new client, and she wants to invest all kinds of money, a huge amount of money, and he gets this brilliant idea, well, you know what, I can use this to do this, and then you do this bet and all this, and I'll make money. So that all seems well and fine, but then she wants the money back. She says it was a mistake. Well, it's already been put in to be invested for this bet. And so now what's he going to do? Now he can't give the money back. He doesn't know. So he's got to win this bet to get the money back for her. And boy, so it's just a lot of fun. There's just so much going on and, you know, amazing stuff. There's just something special about Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard together. They are, I don't know, they're just, I don't know, there's a chemistry together, and they are so awesome. And yeah, I love it. So this release here is a brand new 2K Master, and boy does it look spectacular. This thing looks amazing. I have not seen this film look so good ever. and it is just gorgeous. It comes with audio commentary and theatrical trailer. It's an amazing release. I definitely, definitely suggest reading our full review of Nothing But The Truth at retroac.blogspot.com and also check this out. Go pick up a copy of Nothing But The Truth. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how funny it really is. The next one we want to talk about is a film about the Army. Interestingly enough, as we talked about, Bob Hope loved to entertain the troops. It was something special for him. It was not a thing that he did because he had to. It was a thing that he did because he really had a love for these men and women that put their lives on the line. and it was something special. Well, he did many, many military-type films, and Keaton Lorber Studio Classics have released 1941's Caught in the Draft. A very, very cool little film. Caught in the Draft, Bob Hope plays an actor who can't stand loud noises. well that's going to really not be good when you're in war with bombs falling and guns going off and all it's not going to bode very well and he can't stand it and he gets an idea of how can I get out of this well I'll get married and then they can't take me because I'm married well he sets up this uh this thing to get married well he finds that his soon wife if you will uh isn too enthralled with him So to try to make himself look a little better in her eyes he decides to ask for the army thinking that, you know, well, this will make her feel like I'm a little more brave. Well, lo and behold, doesn't he get caught in the draft? That's right, so he ends up having to get into the draft, and there he is. Now, interestingly enough, we see who is in this. See that? Bob Hope and who? Dorothy L'Amour. Yeah, Dorothy L'Amour. Amazing. These two have amazing chemistry on screen. And, of course, we know Dorothy L'Amour and Bob Hope from all the road movies. They were in all but, of course, one of the road movies, and we won't go into that. That's for another time. But anyway, Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, and Dorothy L'Amour in all the road movies were amazing. Well, here, Dorothy L'Amour and Bob Hope are back together, and, man, are they amazing together. Well, the name's Gridley Princess, Harold Gridley. Sportsman, raconteur, polo player, and all-around good egg. Well, don't lay it here, huh? Welcome to that, too, gentlemen. This is a new release from Kino Lorber Studio Classics. Wow. This thing looks amazing. We have the DVD release of Caught in the Draft here in the Classic Cinema Archives. And I checked out the DVD release and this release side by side. And wow, this thing is amazing. It looks spectacular. It is probably one of the better restorations I've ever seen. It looks amazing. There's no sort of damage. I mean, literally, the picture is so clear. I mean, it's mind-blowing. I'm amazed at how beautiful this thing looks. It's spectacular. And I have to say, this is a great, great film. It's a lot of fun, and wow. Now, the interesting thing with this release that I love is that King of Loewe Studio Classics have ported over a lot of the bonus features that are found in the other releases onto this one. This is really cool. First off, you get an audio commentary. You get entertaining the troops, a little featurette. Command performances from 1944 and 1945. That is really something kind of cute that you should check out because it's Bob Hope doing something on radio that is like a little tribute to the troops. and I'm not going to go into exactly what it is, but it's kind of cute. And then Hollywood Victory Caravan. Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, together again. A little film to kind of help to get people to buy war bonds, I think it was, or something, and to kind of support the country during this difficult time of the war. so it's a little you know ad movie if you will or ad video if you will but it's kind of cute in a way it's really kind of cute and then there's a theatrical trailer as well so that's pretty pretty cool I like this I really think this is one of the better releases that I've seen from Keen of Lorber I love all the bonus features that just really does something. It's just amazing. So, yeah, Caught in the Draft is very, very cool. Zoom. I like it. I like it. And then finally, one of the newer releases from Kino Lora Studio Classics is from 1942. And it is a brand new 2K release. New 2K Master. and we all know the movies that Bob Hope did, My Favorite Brunette, My Favorite Spy. Well, here is My Favorite Blonde. I love this. This is so cool. My Favorite Blonde. Madeline Carroll and Bob Hope in a very very cool little comedy spy thriller It is something something special Wow Something that really cool about this too is Sidney Landfield directed this film And for me, that makes it kind of special because Sidney Landfield also produced one of my favorite Bob Hope films, which is Lemon Drop Kid. So that's pretty cool. But this one is a really interesting film because Bob Hope here, he's a vaudeville performer. And he performs an act with a penguin. well see the interesting thing here is that he gets a telegram from Hollywood saying that they want the Penguin to come out and be a Hollywood star and he wants to be the star but he can't be the star because the Penguin is going to be the star but they'll give him some money to be the trainer Okay, whatever. So anyway, he takes up the deal and he's going to go to California. Well, lo and behold, doesn't he get caught up with this interesting lady here, played by Madeline Carroll, that just happens to hold an interesting, well, something. I'll just say something. I'm not going to spoil it for you. She holds something very special and she kind of passes it along to Bob Hope. and he doesn't realize he has it, but some Nazis realize he has it. And then they want to get it back and they're trying to get it from him and it just blows up. It goes nuts and crazy. And then these two are on the run from the Nazis trying to get away. It's just crazy. If you've ever watched My Favorite Brunette, you kind of know what you're going to get with My Favorite Blonde. It's kind of the same thing. And it's just a cool film. You've really got what it takes. Well, I ain't exactly a cream puff. Cigarette? Never mind. Thanks, George. Might be a saw on that one. Oh. I have to say that I am so impressed with these releases from Kino Lover Studio Classics. They have done a tremendous job with these. I have never been more impressed in my life than with these new 4K and 2K Masters. These are so gorgeous. Wow. If you're a fan of Bob Hope, I highly, my highest recommendation to go and pick up a copy of My Favorite Blonde, Caught in the Draft, and Nothing But the Truth. I think you're going to be totally impressed with these amazing films from Kino Lorber Studio Classics. Well, I suppose you're right in a way, Walt. Sure, I'm right.
