Transcript: Christian Movie Reviews: Southland Tales Blu-ray Analysis

Greetings, Classics Cinema TV fans. This is Pastor Jay here with you once again on a Flashback Friday. Today we're talking about an interesting film from the early years of the Hollywood icon now, Dwayne Johnson. Many fans may know Dwayne Johnson from his early years of wrestling in WWE as The Rock. But he became an interesting character in wrestling and that catapulted him into Hollywood. He began doing little films and then more and more and more. And then he's become amazing. And he is just, as we're recording this, just released the day that his new film for the DC Universe, Black Adam, is going to be released. So that is really, really cool. And so because of that, we've decided to talk a little bit about a release from Arrow Video, the good folks at Arrow Video. Southland Tales. Very interesting film. Starring Dwayne Johnson, Sean William Scott, and Sarah Michelle Gellar. But this film here is really interesting because the way this film is, the tagline is, This is the way the world ends. Well, interesting film. This takes place in L.A. in 2008, is the film. and the city stands on the brink of collapse if you will from social economic and environmental chaos and all kinds of bad stuff going on And three characters these three characters kind of find themselves together in the midst of all this chaos. Dwayne Johnson plays an action star who has amnesia. Sarah Michelle Gellar plays an adult film star who's developing a reality TV show and then a police officer, Sean William Scott, whose identity has split in two. So very interesting characters. They're all together for this chaos that is ensuing in the world. it's really interesting to see Dwayne Johnson and Sean William Scott together because they were together earlier on in the film The Rundown so that was really really cool back together again these two because they had great chemistry in that film so they're back together in Southland Tales and of course this is not Dwayne Johnson's best of course not Dwayne Johnson has really upped his game as the years have gone on, and he has really, you know, become something special. But anyway, let's talk about the release itself. Southland Tales comes with a beautiful slipcover. I love this slipcover. It's really awesome. And then you get two different kinds of Blu-ray card that you put in there, and you can get this cover, or, which I like the different one, you can get this cover. Very, very cool. I like that. I like having two different covers. But anyway, this comes with a tremendous booklet filled with all kinds of information about Southland Tales It also has two discs First disc Second disc First disc is the theatrical cut. With all theatrical releases, the studios will cut down things that they feel are not necessary in the film. And they'll make their cut of the film. But you also get the cans cut, which is more or less the director's cut. two disc set filled with bonus features this film has been restored in 2K by Richard Kelly with his approval and very very cool presented in high definition of course the 145 minute theatrical cut and the 158 minute cams cut which is pretty cool you got optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing which is always a very cool feature you get audio commentary for the theatrical cut by Richard Kelly you get a making of featurette very awesome and it goes really really far deep into what this film is I'm not going to go through all of it but there's just tons of stuff As you can see right there, look at all that stuff. I mean, just tons and tons and tons and tons of bonus features there. So, yeah, there's a lot of stuff there. Yeah, so, yeah, if you're a fan of Dwayne Johnson or Richard Kelly, the man that brought us Donnie Darko, you may want to check this one out. I do have to say if you watched Donnie Darko you know what you getting here because it kind of the same thing Donnie Darko is very very muddy at times It kind of hard to follow. And that's kind of what Southland Tales is to a degree. There's a lot of stuff going on, so it can be a little bit hard to follow. So that's why you've got to keep your eyes on it and kind of intently watch. And even after you intently watch it, when you get to the end of the film, you kind of sit there and say, what have I just seen? but that's what makes it kind of unique. It is an adult film, so you need to realize there's a lot of adult language and adult content, so that's something you need to think about if you're offended by that type of stuff. You might want to think about that before you watch it, but it's a unique film, and so we wanted to spotlight this and just kind of let you know about Arrow Video's release of Southland Tales featuring Dwayne Johnson, an early film from his career.
