Transcript: Christian Movie Reviews: Spaceballs Blu-ray Analysis

Greetings, classic cinema and TV fans, this is Pastor Jay here with you once again bringing you another silver screen spotlight. Today I want to talk to you about one of my favorite parody films. spoof film, if you will. I love these kind of films that just kind of take a genre or something that we love and then just kind of throw it on its ear and just make fun of it a little bit. It's just kind of fun to see those type of things. And probably one of the best ones that ever did this was Mel Brooks. Mel Brooks was amazing. And Mel Brooks produced many, many films that kind of were that spoofy kind of film. Whether it was Robin Hood, Men in Tights, or whether it was Young Frankenstein. Who didn't love Young Frankenstein? Silent Movie-ish. Or High Anxiety. So many of them. Anyway, The Producers is another one. But just amazing films. But one of my favorites that he ever did was the film Spaceballs. Now, interestingly enough, Spaceballs was his attempt. He said in a documentary, he said that he had spoofed everything. So he thought, what else is left? And so he thought science fiction. So the biggest part of the science fiction world at the time was Star Wars. Star Wars was iconic. It had gotten such an amazing following that how do you not spoof Star Wars? He did get permission, George Lucas' blessing to do this, so that was a good thing. You never want to make somebody mad especially George Lucas He got his blessing to do it and it was pretty cool What what we got was Spaceballs and it was just a fun film basically making fun of the science fiction genre and that space film and all that You had your amazing characters, Rick Moranis as Dark Helmet. Dark Helmet, yeah. Darth Vader, Dark Helmet, yeah. And with that big, huge helmet on, you know. uh you know dot matrix c3po you had barf for chewbacca um which was uh john candy wow amazing lone star lone star think about it lone star han solo yeah uh just and and and mel brooks as yogurt. It's so funny because I love it. I love it when they're all marveling at yogurt. The magnificent yogurt. The wonderful yogurt. No, no, no. It's just plain yogurt. See, that was his mind. It was amazing. Now, the interesting thing is Kino Lorber Studio Classics have released this, the iconic film Spaceballs on Blu-ray. Amazing. Amazing. It is so cool to see this on Blu-ray. And, wow. I've had this version, the DVD version, for many, many, many, many years. And have loved this version. But, you know, what do you do? Do you just stay with the DVD forever, or do you upgrade to a Blu-ray? You upgrade to a Blu-ray. I mean, that's what you do, especially in this generation. Now, interestingly enough, this is amazing, amazing. We're going to talk about the picture quality in just a second. But on the DVD release, you have all these amazing features. Audio commentaries by Mel Brooks, documentaries, John Candy, comic spirit, conversations with Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan. All kinds of awesome stuff is in this DVD release They ported all these special features over here on this Blu release which is so awesome I'm so thankful for that because, you know, you want that. You don't want to have this. This is not necessary to have this and to have this. It's not necessary to have both of them. So, yeah, this is really cool. This is amazing. Now, what makes this so cool is the picture quality. Because there have been times, I'm going to be honest with you, there have been times in certain Blu-ray releases from other companies that you get the DVD release and then you get the Blu-ray release and you look at it, there's no difference in the picture quality. or the picture quality sometimes in very rare cases are even worse in the Blu-ray than it was in the DVD, which doesn't make any sense at all to me, but it's true. It has happened, and that is so shocking. Well, I am absolutely thrilled to be able to say the picture quality of Spaceballs on Blu-ray compared to the DVD, there's no comparison. I mean, this, the picture quality is spectacular. It's crisp, it's clear. In the DVD release, there is some pitting of the picture. It's like fuzzy in areas, right? I don't know why that is, but there's like a little bit of fuzziness in the corners and stuff when it's the space. You know, there's just that little bit of fuzziness in the corners. and it's like pixelation and stuff, and it just doesn't look real spectacular, right? So I paused that and I looked at it and I said, okay. And then I went to the Blu-ray and I looked at it and I examined it at the exact same second, the exact same picture frame right then and there, and I paused it and I looked at it and I examined it. And there is none of that. It is crystal clear in Spaceballs on Blu It is gorgeous It is amazing It is probably one of the better picture qualities that I seen anywhere I mean it literally is crystal clear The gold of Dot Matrix is popping I mean it just it pops and the darks are dark and moody of space It's just immense and dark, and Dark Helmet's helmet is shining. It's just, it's amazing. It is a beautiful release. I cannot tell you how amazing this Blu-ray looks. It is so spectacular. I have to tell you, if you are a fan of Mel Brooks films, a fan of Spaceballs, or a fan of the Star Wars, or those spoof films, or whatever, and you want to get your hands on a copy of Spaceballs, I highly, highly suggest picking up this Blu-ray release from Keen Lorber. Unbelievable. There's no comparison between the DVD and the Blu-ray release. There's just no comparison. It is the Blu-ray, hands down, 100%. There's no comparison. It's just not. So definitely, definitely, if you want a copy of Spaceballs, definitely check out the Kina Lorber Studio Classics version. It is definitely, definitely worth it. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with how amazing it looks. Alright, this has been a spotlight on one of my favorite Mel Brooks films, Spaceballs. I hope you like it as well.
