Greetings Classic Cinema and TV Fans, Pastor Jay here with you once again on a Flashback Friday. That is right, we are back with you once again and this time around we're bringing you another awesome release for physical media fans and those Blu-ray collectors, you know who you are. If you're anything like me and you love those classic Blu-rays, man, this is the golden age, man. This is really, companies are going crazy and just giving us classic movie fans so much great stuff. And Criterion Collection, wow, have they just done something spectacular. Yeah, just got this the other day, and this is the Criterion Collection's Blu-ray of History is Made at Night. Oh my goodness. This is a really interesting film. This stars Charles Boyer. Now, Charles Boyer is the international heartthrob. Women just loved Charles Boyer. He was in so many great films through his career. Probably one of my favorites, of course, is Gaslight, a film noir that is just out of this world. So good. But he was nominated for four, count them, four Best Actor nominations for the Academy Award. Unbelievable. And such a great, great, great actor. And this one is another great, great film. History is made at night. Now, this is really an interesting film. It stars Charles Boyer and Gene Arthur. Now the interesting thing Gene Arthur here plays the wife of a millionaire that wants to have a divorce She wants a divorce and wants to get out from underneath all this stuff But he worried that she going to take a lot of his money So they devised this plan. He and his people devised this plan to catch her in a compromising position. Thus, she wouldn't be able to get any money. And so that's the idea there. And the interesting thing is, which is really, really cool about this, is, I love this. The man that plays her husband is Colin Clive, who is the guy that played the original Baron von Frankenstein in the 1931 classic, Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein. Unbelievable. So that is worth the price of admission there, in my opinion, but there's so much more story here. So anyway, he has a plan to do all this, well, to catch her in a compromising position and do all this type of stuff. And so they get this all figured out. Lo and behold, they all come in and try to do this, but there's a guy on the outside of her apartment on the trellis. And, you know, it's kind of like, okay, he kind of hears this plan of what they're going to do. So he sneaks in and pretends to be a thief and kind of takes her out of the apartment, gets her in the car, in the cab. and then he tells her what has happened, and then things happen, they fall in love, blah, blah, blah. Now, that seems like enough story there, but there is something more deeper to this story, and that is that they're going to get on an ocean liner, and the ocean liner gets into trouble a la the Titanic. And we won't go any further into the story other than that, But it is a really, really, there's a lot going on. There's a whole lot going on, but the acting is like out of this world. I mean, so great. Charles Boyer is great in anything. Colin Clive, I love Colin Clive. I think he's great in anything. And the lady is played by Jean Arthur, so she's really great in this as well. But it's a great, great story. Now, of course, that's not where this all ends. We want to talk about the actual Blu release here And I going to tell you this is a new 4K scan from an original print of the film Okay? So awesome. This thing looks spectacular. You talk about, they use the term inglorious black and white. This thing is literally magnificent. It is gorgeous. It is spectacular. You want that little bit of film grain because that's what film is, right? You get that little bit of film grain, and it's got that film grain, which is perfect. I was looking through the scan and watching the film, and there is literally no signs of damage to the print at all, at least not that I can see. I mean, it looks absolutely stellar. It is so beautiful. It's just amazing. Now, with this, of course, very, very cool release. You get your Blu-ray, which is very, very cool. I like that. And you get all kinds of bonus features. It comes with this booklet, which is so awesome, giving you all kinds of information. Look at how this rolls out. Just tons, just tons of information front and back all the way around. telling you all about this film, giving you about the stars, about the director, all kinds of good stuff. Just amazing stuff. So that's really, really cool too. But then there's all kinds of special features as well. And there's a radio adaption, which I, as a radio DJ, a host of a radio show, that is like so cool for me. The radio adaption of this film from 1940, very, very cool. I love that, and it actually stars Charles Boyer, so that is awesome. You get a demonstration of how they restored this film, which when you see it, it is like, wow, stellar. You get all kinds of interviews and all kinds of amazing stuff. It's just, I mean, I don't have time to go through all of it, but you can freeze frame it and look. I mean it is just all kinds of amazing stuff there Look at that Wow Just great stuff So all kinds of awesome stuff from this film and from this from the Criterion Collection Oh my goodness It is so good You definitely if you're a fan of Charles Boyer or a fan of those old 30s romance films, this is an absolute spectacular release. This is so good. This film was so good. It really, it should have been nominated. It's that good, in my opinion. It was really a great film, and the special effects were really good as well for 1937. Really awesome stuff. I just love it. So anyway, if you want to get a copy of the Criterion Collection of History is Made at Night, definitely pick this up, because As far as I can tell, this is the only way you can get it. I have not seen it on streaming. I haven't seen it in any other physical media at all. So this is it. This, and wow. So it's pretty cool. It is also available on DVD for those that prefer DVD. So yeah, definitely. Worthwhile checking out. We're going to have a full written review. You can check that out at retroac.blogspot.com. So be sure to go there and check that out. And I highly suggest checking out Criterion Collection online. Tons of great stuff. They are doing some amazing things, and this is just one of the amazing things.
