Greetings, Classic Cinema and TV fans. This is Jason Lockett here with you on another Classic Cinema Plus Silver Screen Spotlight. Yes, this is going to be a very interesting day today because we are talking Yankees baseball. Yeah, that's why I'm sporting my New York Yankees hat, as you can see. Now, a lot of people would sit there and say, oh, see, he's just one of them bandwagon jumpers. You know, that's not actually true. Because, see, I've been all over the country as the son of a pastor. I've been all over the country. I was born in Indiana, so, yes, I have to root for my Indianapolis Colts in football. But I spent a good chunk of my young childhood in New York, yes. So I remember growing up, people talking about the Yankees, talking about all the great heroes of the Yankees, whether it was Joe DiMaggio or the great Babe Ruth or whatever the case may be. I grew up on that. So there's a part of me that just loves that Yankees baseball. And so, yeah, I'm a little bit of a Yankees homer. What can I do? I'm a little bit of a Yankees fan. and I've got to be what I've got to be, right? But anyway, I love baseball movies. I love all those old baseball movies, whether it's the Pride of the Yankees or the Jackie Robinson story, or whether it's as whimsical as the Angels in the Outfield. I just love those baseball films. They're just so cool. And one of the baseball films that I love deals with a Yankee himself, and it is the great amazing spectacular iconic legendary Babe Ruth Oh my goodness Babe Ruth the Babe that is right We talking today on the Silver Screen Spotlight The Babe starring John Goodman I actually, when I saw this film for the first time many, many, many, many, many, many, many years ago, I thought about it and I thought, Boy, John Goodman really kind of looks a little bit like Babe Ruth. Not overly, but a little bit. I was like, wow, that's not bad casting. They, of course, had to fix up the nose a little bit because Babe Ruth had a little bit more of a wide nose, so that's why they had to kind of widen it out a little bit. But, man, what a great film. What a great film. And I love what's on this release here. there was only one. And yes, Babe Ruth was an iconic character and iconic baseball player. Just amazing. So spectacular. In a day when you read about Babe Ruth and the things that he did And, you know, doing it with non-enhancements. I'm not going to go into grade two. So on that, you know what I'm talking about. Non-enhancements and all that type of stuff. He truly was the greatest, probably greatest baseball player of all time as far as hitting-wise. Just amazing. Just great. Just spectacular. Best of all time. At least in my opinion, okay? But, yeah, I love this film. Now, I have to be honest with you, the film The Babe is not historically accurate. No, it's not. It's not historically accurate. Not at all. It is Hollywood fluff in a lot of ways, so it's not historically accurate. There's a lot of stuff that's fluffy and stuff like that. And it's the same way with The Babe Ruth story that starred William Bendix. It's the same thing. It's a Hollywood fluff story. uh this one a little less fluffy than than you know uh then than the Babe Ruth story with William Bendix but but it still fluffy it they they they don go into great detail about the actual story of Babe Ruth and all but but it is a great film there a lot of things inaccurate and we won go into great detail about the actual story of Babe Ruth and all but it is a great film There a lot of things that are accurate and we won go into great detail You can watch the film, and then you can read or watch a documentary or something and see the difference. There's some difference, but I enjoy the film so very much. Now, Mill Creek Entertainment have released this thing on Blu-ray, and I have to say with the way it looks, it looks absolutely stellar. It really has the perfect amount of film grain, just perfect, just to let you know it was shot on film. It's so good. There's basically no bonus features. That's the sad part about it, but what are you going to do? It just is what it is. The disc is a different cover art than this. different cover art, which is cool, and we're going to show you a very special feature in just a little bit. But the only really bonus feature on this disc is the English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing, which is always a nice feature, and I like that. But what makes this release so spectacular is the slip cover. Now, I know people are going to say, the slipcover? What's the big deal about a slipcover? This is the big deal about the slipcover. Look at that. It is a retro VHS slipcover Blu-ray. And look at that slipcover. My goodness, is that not spectacular. Look at that. VHS tape, you know, coming out. of the VHS cover. That's what it looks like. You got the babe. It looks just like a VHS tape with that label on there. Very awesome. And then the back, you got the VHS tape coming out. Oh my goodness. Is that spectacular or what? That is just so cool. And then of course you got the babe like this on that side. Very, very awesome. Love this. This is what makes the Blu-ray worth, this blu worth buying if you remember those old VHS tapes if you you know went to Blockbuster and you you rented VHS tapes or whatever you remember those times of going back in those times and renting from an old maybe not even Blockbuster, but maybe a mom and pops DVD or VHS store. You remember renting them and doing that. This is what makes these so cool. I just love that. Oh, my goodness. It is spectacular. This is what makes it worthwhile. You know, I wish there were bonus features, of course. I mean, you like having bonus features, but what makes this release so spectacular is this. And so, yeah, if you're a fan of those baseball films, definitely pick up The Babe. And I will tell you, if you were a kid in the VHS days or just have that nostalgia for VHS, pick up this copy of Mill Creek Entertainment's The Babe release, the retro VHS version I think you're going to just marvel at it and you'll love seeing it on your shelf like that it is very, very cool John Goodman at his best, really, really spectacular and just a great film and a very awesome looking release from Mill Creek Entertainment so definitely go to Amazon.com and pick up a copy of The Babe on Blu-ray.
