Music Greetings Classic Cinema TV fans and comic book fans. We're back once again. Jason Lockhart here with you. Bringing you another comic book round up. Yeah, we've been... You know, this is a brand new feature here on Classic Cinema Plus. and many are probably like me. If you like movies, a lot of people like the comics as well. The comics are a very, very great way to bring entertainment and yet still be reading and that is a great thing. So today we're going a little bit darker maybe, a little more adult. and we're talking about a graphic novel that holds a lot of, a really, really special place in my heart and I'll tell you why that is in just a minute. But we're talking about Watchmen. Wow. The Watchmen. A great, great graphic novel by Alan Moore and David Gibbons and wow, it is so awesome. Now, many of you may only know The Watchmen from the movie The Watchmen or the little short film Tales of the Black Rider. I don't know. While these are very good, there is nothing like the experience of experiencing this, the novel told in its entirety. Because with all things, with a movie, no matter how long it is, it cannot really tell the entire story in its entirety like the graphic novel can. I will say the movie did a good job in getting most of it correct and basically making it pretty close to the graphic novel, it was done very well. A little more adult than the graphic novel actually was. Of course, you've got to take into consideration with a movie and putting an R rating on it, you can get away with a lot more than the comic book people could get away with back in the day when they made this so there was a lot that they couldn do So that why there a lot more in the film than there is in the actual graphic novel Basically, The Watchmen is about a group of superheroes that have been blacklisted, if you will. crime has basically taken over the world and there is no more superheroes and people are just left to do whatever they want to do. And there's a lot of political stuff going on and that's what makes this novel so amazing is there's a lot of political stuff that's talked about So this is not for kids by no means. This is actually an adult graphic novel. There's a lot of political stuff. There's a lot of intrigue. There's a lot of romance. There's a lot of violence. And just really interesting stuff. Now, the cover is really interesting when you see you've got this yellow with this little black and then this splotch of red. And that is because it is made for a purpose that way. There was a superhero called the Comedian, and he always had a little smiley face button. Well, the way we start this graphic novel is the Comedian has been killed. And the little button, the little smiley face button that he had, has one little drop of blood that's gone down, and that's what you're seeing here. And then what goes forth is the comedian's been killed by somebody, but we don't know who, and Rorschach, this rogue, somewhat kind of insane vigilante, which is really an amazing character because he has this mask that he wears but it's the Rorschach paintings where you would open them up and you would say what do you see in this his mask continually changes for his expressions and how he feels which I think was one of the coolest ideas in the history of media I mean wow that is one of the coolest ideas of all time it is so cool But Rorschach goes on this quest to try to find out who killed the comedian try to bring about justice and try to do it his way with bringing justice with extreme prejudice And then there many more stories beyond that and we don have time to go into great detail of all those But it is just an amazing graphic novel. It is so spectacular. I love The Watchmen, and I have to say this is really, really cool. When you look at this, this is the back of the graphic novel here, and you can see some different really, really cool stuff. Watchmen is peerless, a brilliant piece of fiction. It really is amazing. Now, the reason, and I will say too, it is a winner of the Hugo Award with no doubt it would be. It is that great. but what makes this book so amazing to me is I had collected comic books for a long time not as much as I am now of course as I've gotten older and I'm working and I have money and oh yeah I'm buying more stuff but as a kid you take your little allowance and you buy a comic book and that's about all you can do so you don't have a whole lot collecting there so this was really really interesting my dad who has passed away bought this for me at a Goodwill he found this and it is in absolutely insanely great condition when you think about it and you go to a Goodwill but he found this at Goodwill for I think a couple bucks and he brought that home to me and he said, here, you may want this, and I looked at it, and I went, whoa, and I started looking through it, and I was like, the Watchmen, that is really, really cool, and I had never heard of the Watchmen at this point, so I was like, this looks pretty cool, I was a, you know, basically, I think I was in sophomore in high school, I think at this time, I think I was, I don't know, I was in high school anyway when he got this for me and uh i looked at it and i was like this looks really awesome and when i read it i was like this is really probably one of the coolest things i've ever read in my life and uh yeah so this has become something very special to me then when they said oh we're gonna make a movie of the watchmen i thought wow this is this is awesome what is this gonna be like and then like i said they came out with the watchman movie and i was really excited about it. Like I said it doesn take the place of the comic The comic is just timeless It perfect It is literally a perfect piece of literature I mean that sounds so bad when you say that about a comic or a graphic novel, but it's true. It is a perfect piece of literature. I mean, it is, and that's the thing. So many people diss comics and say, oh, well, it's just a comic book, but the thing is with comics is they are literature as well. And the cool thing about the comics is that it's not just literature, it's actually art as well. So you're getting the best of both worlds. You're getting literature and you're getting art, and that's what makes this so cool. So yeah, I highly recommend, if you've never read The Watchmen, definitely read The Watchmen. If all you've ever done is watch this movie, definitely check out the graphic novel. You'll find out that it's it is so awesome. There's so much more story to it. It is so awesome. And the Tales of the Black Freighter, that is this film, is in the midst of this as well. That is something they didn't put in the movie here, but they put it in and made it because it's like, well, It's like a standalone in the thing, and they didn't want to put that in there. So that's why they made it later. But just a good, good graphic novel. I highly suggest The Watchmen. If you've never seen it, definitely check it out. I think you're going to be surprised with it. A lot of intrigue. It's adult, so don't let the kids check it out. It's a little more adult. But definitely check out The Watchmen. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. alright so that's it for this time around for a comic book round up I want to thank you for joining me today be sure to go to our official website Classic Cinema Plus and check out all our reviews and videos and podcasts and articles and all the good stuff we got up there we put something up almost every single day so you can go there every day and check out the new content and until we see you next time with another comic book round up flashback Friday or some other video.
