Greetings Classic Cinema TV fans, this is Jason Locker, Pastor Jay here with you once again bringing you another Silver Screen Spotlight. Yeah, today we are talking about a new release that came out from Warner Archive. I am loving the fact of Warner Archives' releases, bringing these old films to life in HD, and I'm excited about it. I love the old classic horror films from back in the day. And MGM did some amazing things with their horror films back in the day. And MGM produced a classic tale from the classic novel from Robert Louis Stevenson, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Now, interestingly enough, it's kind of interesting that they first did a version of it with Frederick March, and many people consider the Frederick March version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde to be the superior version of this film. But it was just a few short years later that they would redo it again, and this time with the amazing actor Spencer Tracy. Now for the first time on a new restoration on Blu we get Spencer Tracy in Dr Chekow and Mr Hyde A very interesting version of this film We get some amazing actors and actresses in this Ingrid Bergman is in this. Lana Turner is in this. The interesting thing about this, even Frederick March is in this one, which is really, really interesting that Frederick March would come back not to play Dr. Jekyll, not to play Mr. Hyde, but to just be in this film. That's really amazing because most actors would probably say, no, I'm not going to do that, but he did, and I think that's pretty, pretty interesting. Now, to me, I have seen the original with Frederick March, and I have seen this one now, and I can see where some people would say that Frederick March's version is a more superior version. I can see that, but to me, I don't know. There's something about this one that I like really, really a lot. I like the fact that the transformation of Dr. Jekyll into Mr. Hyde is subtle. It's not overdone, right? Like so many times in films when they do Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, they will overdo the transformation. And it'll go from like this clean-cut, amazing, prim and proper Dr. Jekyll to this hideous-looking creature. And where in this one, it's more of a subtle, more of a just a little bit of a change, but it's more of an inward change. It more of a change on the inside and bringing that evil of the mind and of the heart out and I think that was very well done I enjoyed that take a lot better than all these other kind that they do where it goes from prim and proper to like psychotic and crazy To me, I like this version better. I thought it was very, very well done. Lana Turner is amazing. Ingrid Bergman is amazing. Of course, they both are in everything they do. but Spencer Tracy really stands out as he is the benevolent very kind Dr. Jekyll and then when he switches he's that maniacal crazy Dr. Hyde and I think it was just so well done I have watched this and we did a full written review of it you will definitely want to check out that full written review of that it is pretty amazing. This is an amazing release. A brand new 4K scan of this film brings this film to absolute life. When I watched this film and I saw the 4K scan of this on HD, I was like, this is probably one of the better scans of a classic film from the 40s that I've seen ever. there's no signs of damage to this print anywhere at all watching it, it almost I've said this before in some of these reviews but Warner Archives is doing such a great job that really they get the best possible print they can find and then they 4K scan it and there is no signs of damage to the print It almost feels like this is a film shot in 2022 just in black and white. It is that so crystal clear. It amazing Love this artwork here I think the artwork is pretty pretty cool Love that Same kind of artwork on the disc which is pretty nice I like it. The only downside to this that I can tell you is the lack of bonus features. That's the only downside. We get the theatrical trailer of this classic horror film. That's the extent of it. But I will say the 4K scan to me is enough to make this a one to add to your collection. It is that so superior of a scan that you're going to want this for your collection. It is that well done. Warner Archive just continuously knocking releases out the park with awesome new scans and all. And I'm just excited to get to share these with you. be sure to go to Classic Cinema Plus and read the full written review of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde I think you're going to love this one pick it up now and have it ready for when it's Halloween season make a perfect thing to watch at Halloween time it really would, it's awesome we want to thank Warner Archive for sending this our way so that we can share it with you we appreciate you watching and as we said be sure to go to Classic Cinema Plus and check out all the articles and reviews and podcasts and all kinds of stuff we got up there all the time we'd appreciate it be sure to like, share, and subscribe and until we see you next time with another Silver Screen Spotlight this is Pastor Jay, Jason Locker reminding you that if you want to see a great film check out a classic and we will see you next time have a blessed one, bye Thank you.
