Greetings Classic Cinema TV fans, this is Jason Lockard here with you once again bringing you another Silver Screen Spotlight. And today we are talking about a release, one of my favorites from my childhood. I remember our family picking this up and renting this, one of the video rental places, when I was a teenager. And it was like the coolest thing in the world. Actually, something that, as I look back on it, it was probably one of those ones probably I shouldn't have been watching because looking back on it now, it's a little more adult-themed. But hey, we watched it anyway. I did watch it with my family, so it's not like I had parental guidance anyway. but uh but it was it was a pretty pretty cool little release and it's been something that has stuck with me uh ever since i i first watched it and i've watched it so many times on tv and um recently uh we got a collection of uh films and uh this film was on there right but the good folks at mill creek have uh done something that when i saw they were going to do it i was like This is probably the coolest thing I've seen in a long long time They have done a as part of their retro VHS Blu-ray collections They have released get this King Ralph on Blu and it the retro VHS style Blu This is so cool King Ralph is a comedy from the very early 90s and it stars John Goodman John Goodman of course, is known for playing Dan Conner in Roseanne, the TV show. But King Ralph basically is about the British royal family. They're all together. The whole lot of them are all together for one time, and they decide to take the picture for posterity, and that way it will be forever, right? Because they're all together one time. So it's been kind of rainy and all, And so they finally get everything together. But a little mishap in taking the picture takes place. And I'm not going to go into detail on that. And it accidentally wipes out the entire British monarchy. They're gone. All of them gone in just like that. and now they're trying to find a monarch. They're trying to find somebody down the line that could take the throne. Come to find out, they have to go clear to America, to Las Vegas, to find a lounge singer, Ralph Jones, and that's where the next monarch is. It is King Ralph. Unbelievable. And now the whole film basically starts at about that point where they bring Ralph to England and they start to try to acclimate him to the monarchy to make him in from this kind of slobby obnoxious American to the prim and proper British monarch And it's just a lot of fun. It really, it's a lot of fun. It's a really good little comedy film. seeing Ralph trying to do all the things to be a monarch, and yet, you know, he just fails continuously all the time. It's a lot of fun. Now, I will say, as I rewatched it again, I look at it as an adult now, and I go, wow, I probably, like I said earlier, I probably shouldn't to watch this. There is some off-color language, shall we say. Nothing, nothing like really, really bad. And some innuendos and stuff like that. And my naive self as a young teenager, I probably missed half of them. Because I honestly don't remember them. I didn't remember. So I was apparently very naive. But anyway, this film was rated PG, and really, when you think about it, it really should have been about a PG-13. It really should have been. I don't know how it got away with PG. It should have been PG-13. But anyway, it is a fun little film. The Blu-ray itself, it comes with the English subtitles for the deaf and hard and hearing, which is really, Really cool. A little bonus. Love that. But that about all there is there in features other than the film looking spectacular I used to seeing the film in full screen format because that usually where I would watch it was on TV We watched that one time and then I would watch it on TV And when it would come on, and that's probably why I don't remember too much, because they probably edited a lot of that out for television. But I would see it in the full screen format, right? This was complete in widescreen, which is so cool. um but like i said now where the thing really shines is this right here the special uh slip cover look at that slip cover it's got the vhs tape coming out of the slip cover thing i love it that is so cool it's same thing in the back you see the vhs tape there which then uh when you take the slip cover off you got different artwork which is even cooler love that i like that artwork That's pretty cool. I like that. So, yeah, that's pretty awesome. I just love it. So if you want a full review of this, we have that up at Classic Cinema Plus. Definitely go check it out. It is definitely, definitely worth checking out. King Ralph was a lot of fun. Just be aware there is some things that are a little off color and a little risque, if you will. So it's not something that you want to sit down with the whole entire family. it's something more for older teens and adults. King Ralph on retro VHS Blu-ray from Mill Creek Entertainment.
