Greetings, classic cinema and TV fans. This is Jason Lager, Pastor Jay here with you once again bringing you another Silver Screen Spotlight. And today we're talking about a Robert Downey Jr. film in his early career, if you will, and we're talking about Heart and Souls. This is a very, very interesting film. This was a film that I have never seen before, okay, at all, and so when I read about it and I saw that the good folks at Mill Creek Entertainment were releasing this on Blu-ray, I thought, Well, that's a pretty good time to check it out, right? So that's what we've done. And so we're talking about Heart and Souls, the new release from Mill Creek Entertainment. And what I love about it the most of all is it is a retro VHS style Blu-ray. I love those retro VHS style Blu-rays. That is so cool. So there's something special about these because as a young kid, I remember going to the video store and renting VHS tapes and watching them with my family. And so there's a very cool nostalgia for me because I remember when I see these type of things like this from the video store, this type of thing, it just takes me back to my childhood. And I sit there and I go, wow, that was such a fun time. And so I love what Mill Creek is doing. Personally and this is me personally I think Mill Creek does the absolute best job with the retro VHS style Blu A lot of companies are doing them but I don know There just something about them that Mill Creek really puts a lot of love into this, and it really looks spectacular. You just see the VHS tape, and you got the little stickers there, and you got all this. It just looks really, really cool. I mean, you can just see it. I mean, you got the VHS tape there. You got the synopsis in the back. It just looks like one of those old tape sleeves with the tapes coming out and all that you would get at the video store back in the 80s and early 90s, you know. I just, I love it. I love it so much. Now, Heart and Soul is kind of a comedy drama. It takes place, it follows Robert Downey Jr.'s character. He's an executive and he's trying to make it up in the ladder of success. But Robert Downey Jr. had something very interesting happen to him, his character. As a child, he was born on a certain day. But also on that certain day, there was a bunch of people that were on a bus that crashed and they were tragically killed. Well, what happened is these souls didn't go on. They stayed behind and kind of were like, if you will, guardian ghosts, I guess, if you will, or guardian spirits, shall we say, for this young kid. He kind of had these as his friend. Nobody else saw him but him. And they kind of watched out for him and all. And finally, as he was growing up they said you know what we got to leave him alone so that he can grow up Well they still stayed behind They were just invisible to him So he grew up and he became kind of a jerk shall we say He not the most kind and compassionate of people And so suddenly they decide that it's time to show up again. So they end up showing themselves to him again, and it's all for a purpose. These individuals, these souls, need Robert Downey Jr.'s character's help to pass over to the next world, right? They've got to complete tasks, something that they need to complete so that they can rest in peace, if you will, and move on to the next life. And so Robert Downey Jr., his character actually helps them all complete their mission so that they all can move on, and thus he can move on and have a happy life and be more happy than what he is. When I first read it, I thought, well, it's an interesting film. But I was not prepared for how good of a film it actually is. I actually love this film. I mean, I loved it. I didn't expect to love it this much. It is spectacular. It's a really, really, really, really good film. Now, I will say there is a little bit of adult content in it. There's a little bit of adult language in adult situations, but nothing like majorly bad. It's pretty tame, I guess, in comparison to films in this generation. But it is really a good film. I love it so much. Now the retro VHS slipcover is spectacular to me But if you don like these there are some people that say that stupid I personally can agree with them but there are people and to each his own So if you don like that, the actual Blu-ray cover is like this. So you do have that. So if you don't like the retro VHS slip cover, toss it. You got it like this. It'll work. Okay. Neal Creek's got you covered both ways. So I like that. There is really some cool bonus features in this, and we won't go into great detail on that because we have a full written review at Classic Cinema Plus. Definitely go check that out for the full written review, how this Blu-ray looks in the transfer, all the bonus content, everything. It's on the website there, and you can check that out, the whole written review there of Heart and Souls.
