Greetings Classic Cinema and TV fans, this is Jason Lund back with you once again on another retro drive-in podcast. Today we are looking at a brand new release that is coming up from the good folks at Mill Creek Entertainment. As we get started, as always, be sure to like, share, and subscribe. We would appreciate it so much. It helps out so much, and we thank you for tuning in. Let's jump into this. Yeah, so today we're not so much talking about retro drive-in per se. We're talking about something that is what we're doing nowadays as everything is streaming from Disney+, Netflix, let's see, Hulu, YouTube TV, you got your Peacock Networks, you got Paramount+, you got all these different networks that are clamoring to get you to subscribe to their streaming service, right? And I want to give a huge shout out to companies like Mill Creek Entertainment that are giving physical media fans the chance to own these releases that we love so much and have them on physical media. Because, I mean, I have streaming service here at Classic Cinema Plus Studios, of course. We do. We subscribe to several of them. And, you know, and it's cool to have them, you know, just to know something's there, click it, go and, you know, enjoy it. I mean, that's great. I mean, I don't have a problem with it. But if I want an actual program, I'd rather have it on physical media for the simple reason that, you know, then you have it. Because one of the networks we subscribe to is Peacock Network, right? I love the old classic shows, but here recently we took a look and found out that a lot of the classic shows that we were watching has disappeared because of the fact there's licensing. They have it for a certain amount of time, and then once that licensing is over, unless they renew that licensing agreement, then the shows disappear. Oh, that's bad. That cannot happen if you have it on disc. So that's why I am a proponent of physical media, because once you have it, they can't take it from you. You know, so anyway. But now let's get to what the release is for this retro drive-in podcast. Okay, we're talking about the brand new release coming this month of October 2023. He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. That is pretty cool. Um, yeah. Now, uh, in the eighties, uh, I was, uh, uh, basically a baby of the eighties, you know? Um, uh, so, uh, I was young, young kid watching cartoons, uh, in the eighties. Uh, and, and I will say, uh, He-Man was not my absolute favorite. Um, I enjoyed He-Man. Oh yes, I did very much so, but He-Man was not my favorite. Um if I had to pick my favorites He would be up there Uh but probably my favorites would have probably been like G Joe Transformers and my absolute favorite of the 80s was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Oh, I love that. Still love it to this day and age. You know, even after all these years, I still love Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. but He-Man was right up there. It would probably be four or five on the list. I don't know because Voltron, it might be five because I love Voltron too. So I don't know. But if I went through this, I probably would say, well, I like that and then that one and that one and that one and that one. So it'd be hard to break it down and say, ah, it was number such and such. I don't know. But I did enjoy He-Man. There was just a lot of great shows in the 80s, cartoon shows in the 80s. It was, for me, the golden era of animated cartoons. I mean, it was just amazing. Such great stuff. Oh, well, I suppose you're right in a way, Walt. Sure, I'm right. But anyway, He-Man was great. I really enjoyed He-Man. Well, anyway, Netflix decided to bring He-Man back with a new series, and it was He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. And it lasted for three seasons, 26 episodes, and all of the episodes are now complete and brought to us in physical media format from Mill Creek Entertainment. And that is so cool. Slip cover, same artwork on the inside, so not a lot of difference there, but that's still okay. A lot of people love their slip cover, so you know, hey, that's cool. But He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, we have all of your favorite characters here. And just to give you an idea, it is on Eternia, the first planet of creation, a demonic tyrant rises. This is Skeletor, of course. With dark armies at his command, Skeletor is on the march, obsessed with capturing Eternia's kingdoms and its ultimate prize, Castle Greyskull. The ancient forces of mystery said to contain the greatest power in the universe. It's up to He-Man and his brave squad of rookie heroes to stop Skeletor and restore peace. So, yeah, this is basically a reboot, if you will, of the original series. Now, I have to say this is, of course, in CGI animation. I love the classic 80s animation. I don't know, there's just something special about it. Filmation and the different animation companies that brought us things like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and He-Man and Transformers and all these. I mean, that was what I love. And I love that animation. But here it's more CGI. Okay, it is what it is. What are you going to do? We're living in a different era. So, you know, hey, everything's CGI in this day and age. Now, I haven't seen this series yet. So, I mean, I can't really talk about how good it is or nothing. If you have seen the series, let me know your thoughts about it. Put in a comment down below and tell me what you think of the series because I actually haven't seen it yet. So, I'm looking forward to checking it out though. This is interesting. All three seasons are collected on four discs. Okay, 26 episodes, four discs There we go Kind of interesting discs I love the fact that every discs are different color schemes That pretty cool I like that They collected in the spindle type format which is not my absolute favorite but we can always change that. We have discs here that are four discs cases somewhere, I'm sure, and we can change that if we need to or if we decide to. But it is the spindle format, not my favorite, But anyway, is what it is. It is presented in widescreen format and in Dolby Audio 2.0, and it comes with English subtitles for deaf and hard of hearing. Always nice addition there. I have to say there is one thing that I'm seeing here with the animation from the front cover that, I don't know, it just seems off to me. And maybe it's just me, I don't know. So you tell me. When you look at He-Man there, does He-Man's body and head look completely disproportionate? I mean, his body looks like it's humongous and he looks like he's got a little P-shaped head. I mean, it really does. I mean, to me, anyway. I don't know. I don't know. I mean, he's got these big, huge arms. His arms look bigger than his head. I mean, tell me if I'm wrong there. I mean, you know, it does. It looks like his head is not as big as his arm. I mean, I don't know. It just looks strange to me. But anyway. But I'm not judging. I'm just saying that it does kind of look that way. I don't know. But anyway. it looks like a very interesting series. I have checked out the trailer and different things, and it does look pretty interesting. It looks like a fun series. So I'm holding back my judgment on the animation until we actually see the series and actually see how good it looks and how the story arc is and all that. So I'm not judging so much, but I'm just saying the animation does look a little weird, especially with He-Man with that small little bitty head on a humongous body. It just looks strange. I don't know. Orko looks a little different, of course. He looks like an android, so I don't know about that. We'll see. But anyway, I'm looking forward to checking it out anyway. What are your thoughts on He-Man and the Masters of the Universe? Did you enjoy this series? I mean, I don't know. I'm not sure how I'm going to feel about it. But there again, let's be honest. I may enjoy this more than most people for the simple reason that I enjoy something that most people don't like. And that is I really love the movie with Dolph Lundgren. Okay. I've been a fan of that movie for years. I still enjoy watching it even after all these years. I'll pop that disc in the drive and I'll enjoy the movie. I really do. And a lot of people can't stand it. A lot of people hate the movie, just think it's just terrible. I really enjoy it. I think Skeletor and I think Dolph Lundgren does good for what he was put in there to do, which would be just a warrior. He did good. I love the different characters, trying to bring in different characters, trying to bring in different ones to expand the He-Man universe. I think that was cool. So I enjoy that To me I really love the He movie So to me who knows I may really enjoy this series I don know But I will say something that I love about this is we seeing Netflix series on physical media. So does this bring forth possible additional Netflix series coming to physical media. Could we possibly see Daredevil, the Punisher series, the different things from Netflix? Could we possibly see these coming to physical media? Oh, what an awesome thing that could be. Wow. I could see so much cool things coming to physical media. Maybe, I don't know. I don't know Mill Creek's licensing agreement with Netflix with this series here. I don't know. I don't know exactly how that works out. But if it does, that could be really cool if we could see, you know, maybe the Netflix series of Daredevil or the Punisher or the different ones like that coming to physical media. That would be so epic. I don't know. We'll just wait and see how it works out. But that's pretty cool. So until then, we do have He-Man and the Masters of the Universe to enjoy on physical media. So that's pretty cool. Netflix series on physical media. That's pretty epic. I like it. I like it. So anyway, there you go. So what are your thoughts on He-Man and the Masters of the Universe? This series coming to physical media. Are you a fan of it? Do you prefer just watching it on Netflix? or would you rather have seen it on Blu-ray? What are your thoughts? Let us know in the comments.
