This is the genre where I really loved when I was a young kid. I loved sci-fi films. There was just something about them. I couldn't get enough of them. I would go to the library and continuously just rent new science fiction, bring it home and watch it. And I was just – and go to – at the time when they were still around, the old mom and pop and video rentals and the blockbusters and different things like that. When I was a young kid, that's what I would do. I would go and rent anything I could find that was science fiction. And I've watched a ton of science fiction over my years. But there are still some that I have yet to see, even after all these years. Because there's been a lot of science fiction made through the years. And interestingly enough, we got several releases here from MGM that are all sci-fi. Yeah, I'm kind of looking forward to these. So three very new releases, two Blu-rays, one DVD, and we're going to jump into this. First off, we're going to look at a little William Shatner. William Shatner, of course, is probably best known as playing Captain Kirk. He is Captain Kirk, you know. And William Shatner is just pretty amazing. I just I'd love to watch Shatner his kind of he's got a unique way about him when he when he acts it almost it almost feels kind of wooden in a way. But but that's his appeal. That's the appeal of him is is kind of that. you know, stoic kind of just like, eh, type of thing. I don't know. There's just something about him that he does so good with that. Now, anybody else that does it and you would sit there and go, oh my goodness, I can't stand this. But Shatner, there's just something about him when he does it. Um, and, uh, MGM have released, uh, a made on demand DVD release of kingdom of the spiders. Oh my goodness Wow Uh yeah I I blown away by this This actual film many people may remember the film in this generation may remember the quote unquote classic, Arachnophobia. This was before Arachnophobia. And I think this film, although we don't know that for sure, Nobody's ever said it per se, but we kind of wonder whether that arachnophobia was not taken from Kingdom of the Spiders. It kind of feels that way, though there is some differences, of course, and Shatner is pretty amazing in this, in my opinion. But anyway, this is kind of a cult classic film, and just to read it, it says, Local veterinarian, Rack Hansen, played by Shatner, and entomologist Diana Ashley, Tiffy Bowling, soon determined that thousands of tarantulas have changed their eating habits, and Verde Valley soon finds themselves at the center of an eight-legged nightmare. This thing is creepy. Oh, my goodness, this is so creepy. This is a very creepy film, but it is so good. Oh my goodness, it's amazing. It's creepy, but it's amazing. It just has a really, really fun feel to it. Love this film. And I have watched this one already, because when I got it, I was like, I've got to get a little sci-fi horror type thing going on in my life a little bit. And oh my goodness, is this amazing. Um, now, uh, MGM here, uh, has released this in made on demand. I will show you. It is a made on demand disc. So it is the, that kind, um, it's, it's made on demand. It's not a press disc. It's made on demand disc. Um, but anyway, uh, that's not always the best in the world, but Hey, it is what it is. What are you going to do? Um, and, and with, uh, MGM releases, uh, especially the made on demand ones, um, they're, kind of bare bones, if you will. Kingdom of the Spiders, no bonus features whatsoever. It's just you load it in the disc, the disc in the player, and it just has the picture, and it has play, and you click it, and it plays the movie. I would have loved just seeing some more stuff on this. I think it would have made it pretty cool to see maybe an interview with Shatner. That would have been awesome. I don't know if you could have done that because Shatner is Shatner and Shatner doesn't always want to do stuff, you know what I mean? So he may not have wanted to do that. But I think that would have been awesome to see an interview with Shatner about Kingdom of the Spiders. That would have been so cool. But anyway, we did check it out. The picture quality looks pretty good. Of course, it would have been better in Blu-ray, you know, upscale and make it really, really look amazing. But for what it is, it looks pretty awesome. It looks pretty good for a made-on-demand disc. Definitely a creepy creature feature. And if you've never seen Kingdom of the Spiders and you kind of have a little bit of arachnophobia and you want to get creeped out, Kingdom of the Spiders will do it because oh my goodness just thousands of spiders just coming in and it creepy It really is and it really is awesome Love it love it It's a pretty cool film. And, yeah, now on made-on-demand DVD from MGM Pictures. Okay, so home entertainment. Pretty awesome. We'll have a full written review at Classic Cinema Plus coming up in a little bit. Now, in addition, we have more sci-fi type films and sci-fi horror. This is a classic. Okay, this is a 1952 film, Red Planet Mars. Okay, this is a really interesting film. It's global chaos when an American scientist, played by Peter Graves, makes radio contact with Mars, receiving messages from an ideal life form on the fertile and energy efficient planet. But when the messages inexplicably take on a more religious tone, a question arises that threatens to cause even more turmoil. Did the message come from Mars or is it an imposter? Pretty interesting. I've taken a quick look at it. I haven't watched the whole film, but I have taken a quick look at the picture quality, and it is pretty impressive. I was really very impressed with how crisp and clean the picture quality is. There's no real signs of damage to this print whatsoever. It's crisp. It's clean. It's the old term, in glorious black and white, and it looks pretty glorious. Clean, awesome, very, very good. Definitely worth checking out. Again, with all MGM home video releases, they're bare bones. There's not much in them for bonus features. But I will say with the Blu-ray, there is English subtitles. So there's at least that. But yeah, other than that, it's pretty bare bones. Would have been nice to see some bonus features. Trailer even. I would have taken a trailer, but eh. Yeah, it is what it is. What are you going to do? All right. But it looks pretty impressive. And if you're a fan of the 50s sci-fi, that's one, Red Planet Mars, and maybe one you'll want to check out. We'll have a full written review of that coming up at Classic Cinema Plus as well. And then the final one is from the 80s, 1983. This is Strange Invaders. Pretty unbelievable. Paul LaMatte stars as a university professor searching for his ex-wife who seems to have disappeared while visiting her hometown of Centerville, Illinois. In fact, the place turns out to be a hotbed of aliens in place since the 50s. and weirdly unaware of how the outside world has changed. Uh, this is a, um, if you will, a love letter to the, uh, fifties, uh, sci-fi films. Um, it really is. And, uh, uh, I haven't seen this one in like forever and I am so looking forward to check it out again It is so awesome It really is From what I remember, the film is just pretty cool. But like I said, I haven't seen it in forever. So I'm watching this again for the first time in forever. So it's going to be like watching it for the first time again, actually. And I did put the disc in and just kind of look at it, and boy, does this thing look amazing. Wow, the picture quality is just beautiful. The colors are just like, almost like Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. I mean, it's just, I mean, they're just beautiful. The blues and the purples and all, they're just popping, just like something out of Willy Wonka. I mean, it is amazing. The picture quality looks pretty spectacular. There's no real signs of damage to the print that I could see. It's crisp. It's clean. It really looks awesome. And yeah, oh man, am I looking forward to this. Again, with this Blu-ray, with all MGM home video releases, the Blu-ray comes with English subtitles, but that is it. There is no bonus features. I wish they would do some bonus features. If nothing else, do the theatrical trailer or something. That would even be pretty cool. But they kind of make them bare bones. I don't know why they do that. I think the addition of a trailer would be really, really nice, if nothing else. But it is what it is. The idea, mostly of all, is to have the movie itself, of course. And if you get the movie, hey, that's pretty awesome. And so, yeah, we're seeing three awesome new releases from MGM Pictures, and I'm looking forward to checking them out.
