Salvation

Definition

Salvation is God's rescue of sinful people from the guilt, penalty, and power of sin, and their restoration to a right relationship with Him — received as a free gift through faith in Jesus Christ. In Christian theology (sometimes called soteriology), salvation includes being forgiven (justification), given new life (regeneration or being “born again”), adopted into God's family, and promised eternal life. It is by grace through faith, not earned by works (Ephesians 2:8-9). Salvation is centered entirely on the death and resurrection of Jesus, who took the penalty for sin so that all who believe in Him may be saved.

Frequently asked questions

What is salvation in Christianity?
Salvation is God's rescue of sinners from the penalty and power of sin, restoring them to a right relationship with Him and granting eternal life, received as a free gift through faith in Jesus Christ.
How does a person receive salvation?
By believing in Jesus Christ and confessing Him as Lord (Romans 10:9), turning from sin (repentance), and trusting in His death and resurrection. It is received by faith, not earned.
Is salvation by faith or by works?
Salvation is by grace through faith, not by works (Ephesians 2:8-9). Good works are the fruit of genuine faith, not the means of earning salvation.
What is the difference between salvation and justification?
Justification is one aspect of salvation — being declared righteous before God through faith. Salvation is the broader work that also includes new birth, adoption, sanctification, and eternal life.
Can a person lose their salvation?
Christians hold different views, but Scripture gives strong assurance to those who trust Christ (John 10:28-29). Salvation rests on God's faithfulness. A trusted pastor can help you study this further.
