Torrential rains leading to overflowing rivers and a series of landslides have resulted in death of 77 people in the state. The Kochi and Kodongallur areas face heavy flooding. Southern Railways and Kochi Metro have suspend their operations in flood-hit Kerala. 35 of the 39 dams across Kerala have opened their shutters to full capacity, leaving large areas of Kerala at further risk of floods. Kerala State Disaster Management Authority chairman and Additional Chief Secretary (Revenue) PH Kurien has described the situation as very alarming. He said the state of affairs will worsen if the rainfall continues at this rate in the coming days.
