Bobby Smith eventually found another piano teacher, Jimmy Swagger.
He discusses his musical style and influences, including jazz and honky-tonk.
We had an old upright piano. When I wanted to play, there was no piano around. I had to go to church to get the piano to practice. I can take the pain What does she bring? And we headed down to Jerry Lee's home. A boy with a dream. That's after, you know, a lot of developments in my life happened. And I had this idea I would get him to show me how to play. So you actually went down to his house? We went down there. I took all of our belongings, put in this little station wagon, Opal station wagon, went down there and pulled up in Nesbitt, Mississippi at 2 in the morning. And I was fascinated because later I began, of course, the light piano play. And then I liked his style then, but I looked at the grand piano swimming pool, I looked all around and knocked on the door and a gentleman answered and had a gun at me. And I said no don shoot And here it was Red West He worked as a bodyguard for Elvis And when he passed on well he went for Jerry Lee Well he was in the hospital and that was a fiasco So I never did get him to help me like I wanted to But you know what? From there, we went to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I went to Jimmy Swagher. So I was going to have him help me. If you can't find one, you get the other. Yeah, well, I did find him, and he was a nice man and everything, and he went worldwide but national ministry. And I just didn't get it. Thank you. He was a worshipper of Jerry Lindos I mean absolutely And during the course whenever he was home you know he played that record over and over That wore out a bottle. They're coming all over Detroit, Clinton, Toledo, and just that moment. Winter cool, like pure, precious gold. Bobby Smith, that was a beautiful song. Tell us where you've been and what you've been up to. We haven't seen you in a number of years. He's a real excellent drummer. So you grew up under the influence of Jerry Lee Lewis. Yeah. And, of course, that beat Jimmy Swagger as well. They were related. So that piano styling, a little bit of the jazz, honky-tonk style. Thank you In my case, it just happened unexpectedly. I have the tears that I might see. Thank you.
