Christ was a lighthouse to the those that society had cast aside, and we are called to be the same. It has been said that we are here on earth for a short time to learn how to bear the beams of God’s love. In learning to bear those beams for ourselves, we learn how to reflect those beams toward others. It is the love of God that brings people to repentance – that same love that could have allowed a broken woman to be stoned, but instead lifted her head and sent her away in peace and whiteness. Countless other examples where Jesus showed love to those most underserving from a human standpoint – people just like me, with hearts as broken and hard as mine.
The song proclaims, “Shine a Light”, but let’s not for an instant think that the light the world needs is our light. We can’t in ourselves generate that kind of light but Christ can. When we let the beams of His love flow in us we can shine light into a dark world just as He did.
