Jason Lockhart reviews three new releases from Kino Lorber Studio Classics.
The first is a comedy double feature, Salt and Pepper, starring Sammy Davis Jr. and Peter Lawford.
The second is a made-for-TV horror film, Ants, about an infestation of ants that take over a hotel.
The third is an Academy Award-winning film, Marty, starring Ernest Borgnine, about a man trying to find love and discover himself.
Greetings Classic Cinema and TV fans, this is Jason Lockhart here with you once again bringing you another Silver Screen Spotlight. And today we're talking about three brand new releases from the good folks at Kino Lorber Studio Classics from Kino Lorber. And I am really excited about these. So we're just kind of giving you a quick look at what has been released and what's been sent to Classic Cinema Plus so that we can review it here in just a little bit in the month of July of 2022. So we're going to start off with a comedy double feature. And we're talking about the Salt-N-Pepa double feature. Okay, so this is a very interesting little double feature. You got Sammy Davis Jr. and you got the great Peter Lawford all in this release here. And kind of a buddy movie, if you will. And buddy double feature, shall we say. It's called Salt and Pepper. The first film was called Salt and Pepper. And then the second one is One More Time. But Salt and Pepper deals with a duo that owns a nightclub, Salt and Pepper. Now, you would think Salt and Pepper would be, well, Sammy Davis, Pepper, and Peter Lawford, Salt, but that's actually reversed. It's actually Pepper is Peter Lawford, and Salt is Sammy Davis Jr. It's meant to be a joke, and that's what it is. But anyway, what it is is these two own a nightclub, and they find themselves continuously in trouble. They first find a dead body and then in the second film they have the Pepper who is Peter Lawford his rich twin brother turns up dead, and he has to kind of take over his likeness and try to, it's basically these guys become like, if you will, detectives, but they're done in a very, very fun and funny way. So this is really, really kind of an interesting little double feature. I'm looking forward to this because I actually have never seen these. Now, I'm a big fan of Sammy Davis Jr. I have loved Sammy Davis Jr. I loved what, anytime I see Sammy Davis, whether it's his singing or him in a movie or whatever, I really, really, really love what what he does, what he puts on screen, I just think is spectacular. Kino Lorber actually released a couple of Sammy Davis Jr. films that I really consider probably some of his greatest work ever. You can check out those releases by searching them out on Classic Cinema Plus and we have full written reviews of those. um but anyway uh same artwork here as is in the slip cover but uh pretty cool um of course uh the classic black and white uh blu-ray disc which i love i love those classic black and white discs from mckinnell orber i don't know there's just something special about them um but yeah i'm looking forward to this so this is salt and pepper this is a double feature uh salt and pepper and one more time, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford. Looking forward to this. For the first time, checking this out because I've never seen these, so these are going to be pretty cool. Then there's a pretty interesting film I remember watching when I was a teenager. This was, I got this on like a DVD or something at the store because there was, because I wasn't able to watch... I wasn't even born when this was on the air. Okay, so that tells you... I wasn't even born when this was on the air. This is a made-for-TV horror film, if you will, and it's Ants. Okay. Now, Ants... You think Ants nowadays, and you kind of think like you know like a One of the different animated films Ants right Well that not what this is This is kind of a horror film It's about an infestation of ants that take over this hotel. And people are just going crazy because the ants are just like going crazy and eating them alive, you know, and all. This is really, really cool because this has been restored in 2K. Really looking forward to checking this out. I haven't seen this one in, like, forever. So, yeah, I'm looking forward to checking this out. We had it on Blu-ray and somehow, I don't know, got rid of it or something. I don't know what happened there. Apparently we got rid of it or something because I've looked everywhere in the collection and I can't find it. So apparently we got rid of it. So this is pretty cool to see it on Blu-ray and in a 2K scan. Pretty awesome. This is a pretty amazing cast when you think about it. In this little made-for-TV movie, you have Suzanne Somers, great Suzanne Somers from Three's Company. Robert Foxworth is in this. Linda Day George is in this. Bernie Casey is in this. Barry Van Dyke. Stephen Franken. you know, just Brian Dennehy's in this, you know, just amazing stuff, amazing, amazing stuff, yeah, so I'm looking forward to this, this actually includes two versions of the film, the widescreen and the full screen version, very awesome, so yeah, I'm looking forward to that, love that, love that cool artwork, that is pretty cool, so yeah, that's pretty cool, I'm looking forward to this. So looking forward to checking this one out again. And then the one that I've been really excited about is an Academy Award winning film starring Ernest Borgnine. And this one he won the Best Actor Oscar for. And it is probably one of his most memorable and greatest roles as far as acting And this is Marty I mean I love this This is such a great film dramatic and amazing Okay so Marty just deals with a guy that is just wanting to live life and find love and yet he considers himself not handsome, not somebody that anybody would want. And it's him trying to discover himself, loving himself, and discover love for himself. And I just think this is a spectacular film. One of the best, and I love Ernest Borgnine in a lot of things. I really do. I think Ernest Borgnine is amazing in basically anything he ever did. He was amazing. But this one is just spectacular. Such a great film. This also has both versions of the film, the full screen and the widescreen edition, which is really, really cool. Audio commentaries and all kinds of stuff. And, yeah, so I'm loving that. And I love that artwork there. That's just pretty cool. That's cool. Marty on Blu-ray. this is from a brand new 4k scan which is absolutely amazing can't wait to check that out so yeah i'm looking forward to these these are these are some great releases from king of lorber for the month of july um these three are something special so uh yeah definitely check them out uh we'll have full written reviews of all three of these releases coming to classic cinema plus for the month of July.
